the performance gains are a little more than you are thinking. an airbox is made to dampen the sound of the intake, that causes impedence of airflow, the goal behind aftermarket intakes is to give greater airflow. greater airflow=some more power. Now if you were to compare intake to intake, such as aem vs injen vs generic, then you'd have more of a point. I can get a cai for around less than $160, no it doesn't have a huge name on it but still it has less bends, bigger piping, overall less restriction than a factory airbox.
