Motorcycle
I was thinking about getting one.. maybe not till next year but sometime in between than and here.. and I know quite a few of the regulars here have bikes.. so what do you guys have for bikes? and what would be a good starter bike for me to get? I'd really love to get a Ducati once I learn to ride, but I don't want to get one right away with my fear of dumping it when I'm just beginning.. and another thing I'm afraid of is not finding a bike I'll fit on.. I'm only 5'10 so I'm not all that tall and I notice on alot of crotch rockets it seems as if I'd not be able to touch the ground and touch the handle bars at once.. What would you guys suggest for a bike once I'm off my learning bike too? I know I'm kind of jumping the gun but I just thought of getting some suggestions from you guys on here.. thanks

I can get away with a motorcycle, I can't with my car
I saw the perfect spot for the license plate on a CBR today.. the spot between the rear tire and where the seat hangs over.. he had enough room to put his license plate.. so it's barely visible but it's visible.. I don't think he'd get a ticket for it but it's a bit harder to read the license plate..

I heard Katanas were one of the worst bikes to get.. that they had bad handling.. Not sure how reliable the information is though, it was some random guy that rides a crotch rocket that stops by to talk to us while we're at the beach on occasion

Katana's are old Technology.. If you think they are fast you should ride some of the new Race Reps!
![]() I personally don't like RaceRep bikes for the street. I'm a fan of naked bikes. They just seem more industrial. I personally don't know why you would buy a race bike to ride on the street when you can get a sporty naked bike and get sportiness and comfort mixed into on. For a starter bike I would look into something with no fairings, like a Ninja 500R, GS500, Sv650, etc. Learn to ride it then step up to something else. They are usually cheaper to buy, and there is less to replace if/when you drop it.

I somewhat agree with you about the comfort. It is heavily dependent on where you are though. I love my race reps here in SoCal, but I took the Duc back to Dallas with me and was wishing that I hadn't. Here in SoCal there are alot of canyons and very twisty roads, but in much of the rest of the country these bikes are, um boring. There just isn't anywhere to take advantage of the suspension and riding position on these bikes. If all you want is straight line speed, damn near any bike will do with the prroper mods and a skilled rider. For instance, on my 99 R6, I smoked a busa because he didn't even know how to down shift. HE REVVED ON ME!!! The rider is more important than the bike. What ever you do, make sure and take the MSF course. www.msf-usa.org http://www.sportrider.com/ride/new_rider_guide/ Since this is an ongoing question can we please get a sticky? or a seperate little sub title thingy?

My first and only bike, ah, the sweet ol' 49cc pocket bike.
With my size, I almost look normal on it. ![]() My parents would never let me get a motorcycle though, they're just those typical asian parents.

I didn't give any input, I agreed with what you typed.
But since you asked for my input, here it is. Get the bike. Although you may want to consider what you do on it, you obviously do stupid/crazy shit in your car and will most likely follow the habit on your bike. A bike is far less forgiving than a car will ever be. |

For some reason I have a feeling I'm one of the few people here that think a car is meant to be driven like it was built for, and not to sit there and look pretty..

Commuting and good fuel mileage? Thats what my honda was built for. ![]() Seriously though.. If you have problems staying out of trouble in your car, you better have good insurance if you get a bike. They aren't as forgiving in event of mistakes, especially in untrained and unexperienced hands. You maybe able to out run the cops on a bike, but can you out run the gravel in the next corner? Just remember to aim for the ditch and hope someone other then the cops find you. If you arent going to respect a bike, buying one is probably a really bad idea.

obviously I wouldn't be stupid with it when I got it.. have to get experience with it before I'd even speed, much less run from cops.

I forgot about your driving record. How old are you? I think insurance is going to destroy you.
I was going to get a boat, but have geared away from that and will be getting a bike. I was looking at the gsx-r. I was on the verge of losing my license when i was 16-17 and I know thats going to come back to haunt me. |

Jesus man. Call and get quotes for insurance. Its going to be insanely expensive. You may as well give up.

I have friends that have bikes with records worse than mine.. They say they pay 200 a month for insurance.. I don't think that's high for a motorcycle? that's about what I pay for my car.. but most of them are a year or two older than me.. I should probably call about for insurance quotes.. I doubt it'd be something I got for a while anyway, at least not till next summer at the earliest..

Thats probably for liability. Just be ready to pay if you fock something up.
I have friends that have been quoted over $10K a year for FULL coverage!!! Thats more then the bike costs. ![]()
