friggen computer

Damn thing wont boot up.

Heres the thing, a couple months ago my powersupply went and it kinda messed up my computer. It fried my voodoo card and HD. So, I asked a friend to give me one, and he did. I started having problems with it, (boot up.. as in it will not detect 'primary slave' or whatever) but they went away after a few weeks. Just recently they started back up again, and I figured it was the HD, but I guess not because I just bought a 5400 IBM 40 gig last night. (fricken expensive) anyways, I havent got the slightest idea for waht is wrong with it? Could it be the cables got pulled or something? All the connections are tight, but maybe there is something wrong with the cable itself...

It basiclaly says:

Primary Slave: !#_!&)*120380200100283!@)#*@)#&4

or some scrambled message like that. And it isnt always consistant.... its REALLY jacked up.

I'm thinking its the motherboard, because its the only piece on this computer that I havent touched yet. If it isnt' I guess its the cable.

Is your new HDD set to master? Did you try clearing the BIOS when you had problems?

I'll stand a distance offf.

Ok new update.

This is how my cord was mapped from my mobo.

It has 2 "ports" or whatever you'd like to call them one was plugged into my HD and one was plugged into my CD rom. I plugged the one from my CD rom into my HD (its at the end of the cord) and it booted up fine.... I don't know how long this is going to last however.

Don't ever put your HD and CD on the same IDE channel. There are two IDE channels on your mobo. Put HDDs on 1 and CD drives on the other. Otherwise your HDD will operate at the speed of your CD (to keep it simple).

Trace the HD IDE cable to the motherboard. It is plugged in to an IDE slot, probably IDE 0. Next to that, there should be an open IDE 1. If its not open, what's in it? Do you just not have a cable?

I would atleast disconnect the CD drive just to make sure that isnt the culprit anyhow.

But, 94_Accords right.. You should have the CD and HDD plugged into the same ribbon.

No, I think you're ok. you should have the HDD alone, the dvd and cd on the 2nd channel, and the floppy has its own channel that can't be shared with the IDEs.

kk

my computer seems to be working flawlessly now.

Anybody play cs?

I finally got mine to work except my framerate is very jumpy. Whenever Im shooting some one, or theres a really close battle, my frame rate shoots down to about 40 from 70 fps.
