I'm not a fan of the valve either, but the water does not have to hit the valve to activate. It works on a pressure drop principal. The intake will suck air from wherever its easiest. If the pipe becomes submerged, it will suck air in from the valve.

yea..i have the valve, but i never put it on..i should get around to doing that...lol
