I'm not sure you save any money in the long run, I agree its fun and do it all the time. Just remember you burn gas now when trying to stop, now your burning 3 things, gas, breaks, and clutch.

If you blip the throttle to match revs you'll lessen the wear on your clutch. More gas consumed though.

clutch repair>brake job>gas
i'll let the gear im in pull me down a little, preludes get brake fade easy, so if im coming off the highway or slowing down at the track, i'll get use downshifting as much as possible so i can actualy use my brakes below 60mph

I just read an article about that the other day. It says that downshifting to slow down does wear the clutch, & I agree with Rice, I've had to change 2 clutches now & that sux sooooo much worse than doing the brakes. Takes WAY longer & is much more expensive. |

Engine braking is inconsequential unless you're flying down a mountain road with the brakes on fire, so yes, downshifting is just wearing the clutch out.

Certified mechanic? I have changed my own clutch twice. I know I'm not certified, but i didn't seem to jack anything up. so I couldn't have done that bad. |

It is harder. lotta tight spaces under my hood. I just pretty muchly disconnected my motor, but left it in the engine compartment hangin on a cherry picker I pulled up. Worked pretty well. 1st time took me 12 hours! 2nd time took me 8. |
