Uhhh....not exactly. As far as digital service goes GSM is pretty much just as old in the US as any other digital service, maybe even older than CDMA and TDMA, but I'm not sure on the actual age. The thing holding back GSM in the US is that there is no national carrier offering GSM right now. AT&T is trying to migrate to a GSM national network, but I've heard they're having issues and keep delaying the migration. And spectrum, courtest of the FCC.

GSM has its strong points and weak points. I like GSM and all, but it does take much more bandwidth than CDMA and costs lots more to set up GPRS than the 1xRTT that CDMA uses.
