I use wheel cleaner, to clean my motor. Works great, and makes the 'rubber' stuff look like new.
As far as getting things wet goes, I usually wrap the electrical connections in aluminum foil, and try not to spray water directly at them. If you have an air compressor, use it to get rid of the excess water when you're done.
