Diesel engines tend to put out a lot less horsepower, but they produce more torque. They also get better gas mileage, and diesel engines tend to last a lot longer then gas engines.

Take for example the Golf or Jetta diesel.

The 2.0 Liter Gas engine:
2.0L, 4-cylinder, in-line
115 @ 5200 (85 kW @ 5200) (Horsepower)
122 @ 2600 (165 Nm @ 2600) (Torque)

1.9 Liter Diesel motor:
1.9L, 4-cylinder, in-line, turbo-charged, direct injection
90 @ 3750 (66 kW @ 3750) (Horsepower)
155 @ 1900 (210 Nm @ 1900) (Torque)

The lowend torque makes the Diesel engine feel peppy, and they get 40-50 miles per gallon.
