This is my GReddy type31 FMIC:

Basically, when air is compressed, it tends to get hot. The intercooler cools the air before the air gets combusted. The cooler the air, the more dense it is. The denser the air, the better for combustion.

AIR FLOW:
Intake section---> Turbo Compressor---> Intercooler---> Throttle Body---> Intake Manifold---> Cylinders----> ***Combustion occurs***----> Exhaust port----> Exhaust manifold---> Turbo Turbine (to drive the compressor again, to continue the cycle)

EXHAUST SIDE:
***combustion occurs***---> Exhaust gas passes through the exhaust port---> Then to the exhaust manifold---> Spins the Turbo Turbine---> Exhaust gas passes through the downpipe---> Then through the cat-converter---> Finally exits to the open atmosphere via the muffler.

Note: Partial exhaust gas passes through a wastegate upon reaching the wastegate set point. Partial charged air exits through the BOV (Blow Off Valve) during shifting/letting off on the throttle.

I hope that helps Accord17......
