I had that problem, and it was timing. But I also changed the fuel fitler beofre I knew that. its funny, we think alike. I used a socket and got a real big pipe as a breaker bar. I had to have my dad help pull on it with me, and then it loosed. brute force it. yours looks kinda like mine, except for that weird black block on top. get someone to help wrench it off.

I doubt the filter will fix all your probelms, but as long as your there you might as well change it.

as everyone probably knows by know, my problem was a loose screw on the rotor. You may want to check and make sure its not loose or missing. after that, shine a timing light on your belt and check that. my timing was one tooth off, and caused backfiring.
