It's NOT a tape. It's a thermal wrap. It is related to thermal dynamics. As air and fuel mixture burns, it expands which is called thermo expansion. The key is, if you keep the expanding gas inside the outlet/exhaust pipe, the turbine (with a relative effect) reaction will be more efficient as the streaming "hot gas" expands through it without a temperature drop. The higher the temperature, the more it will move in a contained area, thus moving the turbine faster. That's the theory behind it. As far as efficiency per application, that is proportional to many factors in a set-up. Detonation is more of a pre-mixture of air/spark/fuel issue.......

Now why do top dragster do not use it? Maybe it's not needed with their set-up due to the CFM versus temperature application. Their turbos maybe spooling quick enough per flow rate of the exhaust rather than going through a complicated thermal tuning.....
