For some reason a lot of Hondas seem to make a "whirring" or whining sound in reverse. It's usually because there's friction between the gears. Maybe it's time for a tranny fluid change.

It's not specific to Hondas.
The explanation I have for it is that regular gears are a helical cut gears while reverse is a straight cut gear, which lends itself to whirring noises. I believe the main reason for the noise is that it's a helical gear driving a straight-cut gear....and yadda yadda yadda, it whirs. I'm sure I can get a more detailed description if you'd like. b |

Everyone I know who drives a manual tranny's car makes a whirring sound, if it doesn't then most would think there is a problem with your car. my friend Infiniti g20t, makes that sound, my girls Neon makes that sound, my friends civic makes that sound...oh and I can't forget my other friends Samurai makes that sound, bateson you're in the clear
