Money for your car...
I was just wondering how everyone gets the money to work on their cars. I understand that most people here are out of school and have jobs and all that good stuff. I'm only a junior in high school, and a good job is hard to find. I'm hoping to work with my uncle this summer doing landscaping and stuff (last year he paid me 8.50 an hour tax free). However, I don't know if he'll need my help this year.
Does anyone have any good ideas for a summer job? I'd like to make at least $2000 this summer so I can get wheels and a body kit, but that may just be wishful thinking. (Sorry if this post is off topic. I couldn't find a better place to put it.) |

No prob...
Anyway, seems like you're on the right track for making money. Pump gas, take out groceries, etc. $2k in a summer isn't that much...

Freelance writing is a way I earned some money...but then again back then internet opportunities were booming. In college I'm doing some glorified security work to bring in the cash during the semester, and for the summer I got an internship that's going to get me $5k or so. Of course I'm not spending all of that on the car...I think.

What 94Accord said. Do anything you can. When I was in school I worked 30+ hours a week at a restaurant and went to school too. Now Im just an old married man that works and pays bills. Ive never put a ton of money into my cars like some of these guys have though. My problem is I always have to many projects at the same time.
Do what you can with the money you have to work with. Dont get yourself to deep in debt with your hobbies. If you do, the hobbies arent fun anymore. Enjoy life and enjoy modding your car, but try to keep your priorities in line at the same time.

You could be a runner for a law-firm, grocery-bagger, invest in a lawn-mower and you could cut yards (huge money) etc... tons of stuff out there, the big money is always made in doing stuff that other people cant/dont want to do...

As much as I complain about my job during the school yr, in the summer its pretty decent. (School custodian) There are zero kids in there and all you have to do is go in and clean some furniture and scrub some floors w/ some zamboni thing. If you can land a building that has others your own age it can even be fun.
Or take my alternative summer job...Driving Range golfball picker-upper car driver. Its fun and you can egg on the people to hit you...and when they dont tell em that they have no skill. Youre outside, can listen to music and you get to cruise around in an armored cart...fun stuff man...trust me. |

Thanks for all the input... it looks like lawncare may be my best bet. That's something I don't really mind doing, and there's plenty of lawns around here that need to be mowed.
I could also do some auto detailing on the side... like washing, waxing, cleaning the interior, etc. |

If you're going to actually be serious about detailing, you need to learn some stuff first. You also need a very expensive array of products. Check out http://www.autopia.org forums and articles.

I applied to UPS a couple of weeks ago, and they finally gave me a call back today. 3.5 - 5 hours days, 5 days a week, 8.50 an hour. The cool thing is, I'll be working from 5PM - 9PM, which means I can still do some other work during the day.

Right now I work at a grocery store, and you know what - that would explain why everything in my car is still stock. Um, no money. And for all of the shit I have to put up with, and the amount I make per hour...bleh not working out.
I'm trying to get back into what I used to do.... clean houses. Yeah, kinda stereotypical but I made a hell ova lot of money doing that, just at the time I didn't save as much as I should have. Finding a different job is a pain in the ass, though. No one will hire me |
