ET for h22 turbo Del Sol
What ET do you think i could have with a slightly built up h22 thats turboed?
I plan on running 8-10 psi after everything on the engine/car is done.

Yeah, w/o a turbo maybe. @ 10 psi I think you could get better than that.

I'm still kinda sketchy about building up the engine though...if anyone can...it may be a lot to ask...but could you maybe list the parts and what they do in engines...and what might need to be done to make it stronger for the turbo...for some reason...this stuff just isn't clicking in my head...

Hmmm, rods, pistons, valvetrain, and fuel system. Yeah, that just about covers it. lol

11's for sure. a 10psi prelude will run low 13'2 high 12's. as far as building a h22, rods, pistons, cams, springs, retainers valves, vales seals, sleeves(which are required for pistons), shot peened crank, valve guides, port and polish. with all that, and proper tuning, you could see low 10's

CAms useless? lol
With a motor you need more air in and more air out right? At a certain point you just need more flow than what the stock cams provide. They open the valves further (lift) and usually for a longer amount of crankshaft rotation (duration). Thus allowing a larger air/fuel mixture to get into the chamber and out the exhaust port. That = mo' powa'! |

Not when your running a huge turbo set up tho i heard. Because when your not running a turbo set up the engine just sucks the air but when it's being forced in it goes in at a predetermined setting. Therefore I heard cams are uselss on a turbo set up. Remember: This is what I have heard. Not my opinion. I'm just seeing if it's true or not.

Even though the air is being forced in, there is still only so much air that the head can flow. The valves eventually turn into a bottleneck.

The flow of air into/out of the chamber is exactly what creates power. Remeber atmospheric air pressure is 14.7psi, and the cams make a diffrence, becuase the valve by design is always in the airflow. If at 24.7psi (atmosphere+boost) air goes in faster, and definetly has more behind it, but the valve is still in the way. It all comes down to VE.
When building a blown motor, the main concern (in a mild boosted situation) is the head gasket, its usually the weakest link. All too common, a engine will explode, throw a rod, etc, but more times than not, thats caused by the AF ratio, if it runs lean, it will pop. (Never ignore fuel when adding more air). the most solid engines run ringed heads (a small ring of metal around the top of the cyllinder that cuts into the soft aluminum head, hard to do in an open deck honda). Aside from that, check the rod bolts (they flex, and thats when you slip a bearing, covering the oil path, then it gets worse from there), the rods, and wristpin lands. But again, the forces to break those usually come from detonation. Just my 2cts. |

all motor cams are useless in a turbo setup, you get valve overlap and you will leak boost. turbo cams will yeild upto 20-30hp on mid pis settings. h22's cams have alot of overlap to begin with, so even more so on that engine the turbo cams will help. cams have a lift and duration spec for each lobe, and when doing all motor, you want a certain amount of valve over lap, turbo you want almost none
