no, it just takes more technology, and other crap to have a car shift and know when to shift on it's own than to have you do it manually.

www.howstuffworks.com and read how a auto tranny works... your head will hurt and you'll understand why they are so much more expensive

I love howstuffworks. I learn a ton from that site. I've also been in an engineering school for almost two years. And the stuff on the auto tranny just lost me completely. I just couldn't piece it together.

In any car, if something has more moving parts, it is more expensive. It costs more to build, fix, install, etc. In the case of an auto tranny, I would assume it was heavier for the same reason. It has more parts in it, so it is heavier.

They aren't more expensive because they're heavier, but they are more expensive and heavier. Automatics (from the factory) usually have slightly beefier gears than manuals as well as torque converters which means their cases are generally a bit larger. Plus you've got to fit in all those clutches, steels, a valve body, etc. And c'mon guys...an automatic isn't that hard to understand.

There are times where manufacturers charge more for a manual because the car is generally made with an automatic. I saw this a couple years ago, but don't remember what manufacturer/model it was.

Somewhat similar to the fact that you can special order any color Audi uses on any of their vehicles, provided you don't mind paying an extra $1000 (if the color isn't standard to the model line) and waiting 3 months for it to arrive from Ingolstadt.
