ok i need to get a laptop. I'd like to keep the cost reasonable, it has to be pretty powerful, and can't be a dell. Got any ideas?

Dells are ok. Sony Vaios are topnotch but extremely expensive. Go with HP, the price is reasonable for one with good specs.

i had so many problems with my old dell it was rediculous. I went through two motherboards and i guess it was a common problem with inspiron's (or the 4000's anyway). I also HATE dell tech support, they're so awful.
I've been looking at compaq/hp. My boss has an hp and i really like it, and my parent's computer (the one i use now) is a compaq and they love it and i think it's pretty good as well. Hence they like the name compaq and probably wouldn't have any qualms about buying a laptop that's a compaq

I like my Compaq PC...never tried their laptops. After all of my brother's troubles with his HP PC, I would NEVER buy ANYTHING with an HP logo (even though I believe they're made by Compaq). That thing was a nightmare.

I believe the problems that HP had is behind them now, I own two of their laptops and they are great and cheap.
I think it's the other way...HP owns Compaq. |

in general, the best laptop for your money is any IBM. everyone else is just imitators.
HP/Compaq, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Dell all are mediocre at best. You always get what you pay for. Alienware makes a very good product, but you WILL pay for it. exellent gaming laptops. IBM offers their Airbag system, which basically detects if the patop is in freefall, and will lock the hardrive, keeping the read arm away from the platters, thus saving your drive. What are your reasons for getting laptop? |

IBM laptops are very good...well everything IBM in the computer product world is very good...but they're sooooooooooo expensive. I don't see a reason to get one unless your're in the business industry.
