The stock knob has a clip on it that releases the shift boot. Squeeze the clip, pull the boot straight down. Now just unscrew the knob.

The first time I tried, I destroyed the clip on the knob trying to get the boot off

I have a stock knob on my car still and there isn't a clip on it. All you have to do is grab the boot right under the knob and pull down, you may have to pull kinda hard but it'll come down. Once you pull it down, the knob will unscrew like you said.

Yeah, you're right, I forgot you just yank on it.

You don't know how long I tried to find this damn clip you're talking about. In my Haynes manual, it says the same thing but when I put my knob on, I found out by trial and error that there was no such clip

I looked at my stock knob, and the "clip" I was talking about it part of that. Just two plastic things going down that hold the boot up.

gotcha. speaking of holding the boot up. I put a razo knob on my car, but I don't have any way to keep the boot up, what gives?

That's the way aftermarket knobs are. I have a Momo knob and a Skunk2 knob... both are the same. I also have an aftermarket leather momo boot that stays up better.
