Automatic Trans.: Convenient and simple to drive BUT the downsides are you don't get as good gas mileage as a manual, you don't have complete control of the car, and you don't get to enjoy driving.
Manual Trans.: The gas mileage is better than automatics because you shift the car manually (yourself), you have total control of your car meaning if its raining you can throw your car into a lower gear for better control and handling, and if you think learning how to drive a manual is hard its really actually more simple than you think and you get used to it so you don't have to think about what your doing, plus it doesn't take much time to learn, if racing or speed is your thing then you would want a manual because you get to control when the car shifts meaning you would let the RPMs run high to get the most speed out of a gear also acceleration from stop to go is better because of this plus also your in control and your changing the gear manually, driving a manual is lots of fun and you get a feel of your car in a whole different way then if it was a manual BUT the downsides are driving a five speed in heavy traffic is often hell, driving a clutch requires lots of attention because you don't have a free hand or foot making eating, talking on the phone without a earpiece or headset a huge task, clutch replacement is bound to happen if you keep the car for a while...costing you about 400 to 600 dollars. So think about which fits you better after you read the above, then here is the result...if you enjoy driving and love the control you have, then get a manual. But if you just like to get in the car and have it do the work, then an automatic would be a better choice. |

Depending on how much abuse it goes through its time used. Some cars don't need a replacement even well into 90,000 miles so it depends on how its treated.

the only reason i switched from auto to manual was for the fun factor. I enjoy driving a stick.
And usually, manuals are quicker, b/c use lose some hp through the torque converters in autos. |

i cant remember what doubling clutching is....i think it might be called something else....its like where u just shift without using the clutch just rev the rpms up and slam into gear (I THINK)...it might not have to do wiht the clutch though..but it will for sure mess up something lol....:o

well i had 2 manuals and the honda is the only automagic, but i like it. auto is fun too. and a stick is not that fun without the clutch. save the money for the triptronic and get an auto, or get a manual and save some more

Well, I drive auto. My car had a auto tran. and it's same as maunal on the VTEC engine. When I drive, and it's shifting the gear on auto. I go with triptronic. Because it's must better to use a hand on shift (w/o using clthch). I did drive w/ a stick. But maunal is way better, and more fun but suck at traffic otherwise it will break the engine. Then cost money to repaired the engine.

So you are basically saying you prefer manual?? I drive an automatic. Manual + NYC traffic do not mix well for me. If Honda offered a tiptronic/autostick/whatever you want to call it, I would have gotten it, but that's a non-issue. |

auto's rob a lot of power and control the shift points messing up the use of your powerband.
as for gas mileage, you can easily get worse mileage on a manual since you can take your rpms sky high every gear. learning to drive it took about two months for me to be completely comfortable, especially in the very hilly terrain where I lived. after you get used to it though you really don't even notice that you're shifting gears, you just do it. when you are really on and going you feel like you're one with the car and you can control your acceleration and deceleration perfectly. i guess that means i like manuals.

once you go stick, you never go back... i hate driving an auto, especially when you get stuck in that one spot at that one speed where it doesn't know whether to go up or down... and it keeps shifting back and forth... grrr...

This isnt always true. Because an auto tranny is computer controlled to shift to give the best gas mileage with the throttle demand. Now with the manual if you shift at like 4 1/2 5k rpms then you will tear through gas a lot quicker than one that shifts at like 3 1/2 4k rpms because of less demand on the fuel...

Tiptronics aren't all they are made to be. Me and firstgeardude test drove a 97ish lude with tip a while back for like one hour. We took it up to 150 and I even killed a gm car with it (can't remember what it was).
But tip doesn't give you that manual feeling. It's not stick without the clutch as they tell you it is. It's basically auto where you get to choose what gear to start with. Everything else is limited. When they come out with a 5/6 speed without the clutch, then we'll talk. |

The reality of your smaller 1.6L to sub 3.0L motor is that you want to get all possible power out of it because its under powered as it is. If i'm not mistaken you can expect to lose 8-12% power to the wheels through stick and 10-15% (forgive me my numbers might be off a bit) in an auto.
Well when dealing with small motors that lose is very notice able. Take anything away from 127hp and your feeling it, add to that 1st gear is taller in auto then in stick and there you have it your car feels slower. Get a bigger motor 250hp+ and the difference is less noticable, (look into the 540i in auto vs stick if you dont believe me). But with the recent improvements in auto, similar gear ratios, tip and better tq converts its getting harder and harder to say STICK RULES. With the similar ratios you get the benifit of 5sp but without the pains of shifting and downshifting is now an option. If you're looking into a newer car say a BMW, check out the stats. On average their auto vs stick are only .2-.4s slower 0-60mph. they also offer their own version of tip which i believe they call 'sport shift'. The gas milage thing is minumal, @5% savings in gas that mean on a $30 tank of gas you're looking at $1.50 savings. Well i guess you could put that money towards your new clutch. If i'm not mistaken and feel free to correct me, most of your gas savings in stick comes from the ablity to put the car in N when driving, so it goes down to idle where as in an auto it stays in gear. As for shift points, i dont know what Auto you're driving but i can make my car shift at ANY rpm I want it too. If you dont know how to do this i wonder how you're still driving. If you plan on touching the motor on a car, i would say go with stick just because more power through a tq converted then it was designed for means trouble in the long run. If you're looking at a daily driver then I'd get auto. Yes its true over time you get used to shifting and it becomes 2nd nature, but why waste the engery driving to work drinking your coffee and trying to shift in stop and go. Of course this all my opinion and we all have them but these days with recent improvements in auto trany's (not including north american cars) its hard to turn your noise down at an auto. |
