Tweaking Amps?

I recently installed this MTX AMP & Woofer Set

I have a 2004 Mazda 3 5dr. Since the factory stereo is the damn dash, I have chosen not to replace the headunit until an appealing one becomes available. I am using a speaker level2RCA converter, and the recommended monster 8-gauge wiring. After everything was complete, I notice that the bass hits too hard or not hard enough....My question is how do I set up this amp interms of the frequency, gain, and eQ?

I have went ahead and ordered the EBC controller...Im sure this will help, but my installer claims that the EBC is the one of the most common reasons for amps and woofers blow. i would assume if you have the EBC at the MAX setting all of the time this is true....I don't know what Im talking about...
