DSL/Cable Users
Are you using any type of Firewall protection on your computers? If so what kind and how is it... Im using BlackIce for now. It works ok. The reason I bring this up is because the other day BlackIce detected someone tried to Run a Denial of Service attack on me, and BlackIce picked it up. If you arent using one I suggest for your sake you get something.

i don't use any firewalls. i really don't plan on putting them on. i have a router for my in home network and i put somebody to run a DoS on me but i couldn't notice any difference. I trid using zonelabs crap and i had to confirm that yes i wanna get on the net. i had Norton firewall and it sucked ass too. Black ice does not seem to work on win 2k at all.

I used Zonelabs for awhile, but now I don't bother. I haven't had any problems either.

Yep i have a linsys BEFSR41 router and it does not have a firewall included. you need to download Zonelabs and pc-cilin to have a firewall. That's after you do the upgrade to ver 1.42. i think it has a built in firewall but not sure

those linksys routers/gateways are firewalls. if you ever try to do a port scan test or have someone ping you, it will come up not responding. Thats the best you can have it when you don't respond to anything ;D Of course i know all this cause i'm ***, heh na i'm goin to school for my MCSE (microsoft certification network engineer for MS 2000)
I have a linksys BEFSR11 linksys cable/dsl router for sale if anyone wants it. Perfect shape, it's only a few weeks old. Email me if your interested BClaps@twcny.rr.com |

actually that thing hoides all the computers behind the router, but in case of a DoS the router is going to get banged up, not your computer, which is a nice thing. Also you can forward ports to one of the computers in your network.

I have a ZoneAlarm. It's good. It tells you who's tried to mess with your computer and stuff.

BlackIce does block...
"BlackICE Defender BlackICE Defender is an industrial-strength anti-hacker system that delivers unmatched protection to your PC. It scans your DSL, cable modem, or dial-up Internet connection looking for hacker activity. When it detects an attempted intrusion, it automatically blocks traffic from that source, keeping intruders from accessing your system. The Risk Is Real" Thats straight from NetworkIce.com, unless they are lying about their product..

Blackice is good. And I am a network security analyst. For homeusers that is the best product to get. Unless allot of people hate you it should not get bogged down with attacks. Turn the alerting off also. Just daily check the intruders log and block them bastards.

I just ran a symantec System check on my machine and it said everything was in good shape and protected well. BlackIce probably has made some improvements to the software since that artical. But who knows for sure. Ive read many other places that say BlackIce is the best of all of them.
blackice.exe CPU = 0% - 5% mem useage = 4,204K

Well, after reading all these posts, I decided to go back to using ZoneAlarm again. Its a pretty good program, and its free (for the basic version).

As for myself, I dont need no stinkin software firewall for my network.
My network runs like this ISP to my Trinux box, Trinux does not use a hard drive, it boots off a floppy Id like to see hackers get through that. Then from my Trunix to Dlinks new DFW-660W, that is a an actuall firewall box (I work for D-Link so im testing out this box for a few weeks, its not out yet) From the 660W to my Cisco uBR900 router (Im also testing this product out) From there to my Cisco Catalyst 2900 switch, then to my network, :P I love having connections... So there you have it, I would like to see a hacker get through that Then again.... they could, if they REALLY wanted to... Ohh yeah, and my serves shut themselves down if they ever get flooded also. As for the NAT, the nat is just a boxs ability to pass information from a internal networks ip to an externals ip. So like you can see everyone on your network with a for example 10.0.0.1 and still be able to get to get outside to say yahoo.com and have them see your ISPs number. So its not really a firewall, it just makes it harder for someone to see the correct IP that you are coming from. On top of that, the Nat Boxs allow everyone in the world to use its own internal IP scheem. Also with our nice NAT boxs we can use the magical powers of subnetting |

OK.. I'm going with zonealarm Pro 2.6.84..
Kinda off this topic.. Do any of you know of a application that I could use to limit the total upload bandwidth to a given program.. example : WinMX..

Hmm... I just installed ZA pro 2.6.xx and it really screwed up my system. I was sure to uninstall the free trial version before I installed it, but nothing worked... it had a problem with vsmon and my internet wouldn't work or anything
Anyway, my main question is this: since the app is constantly communicating with zonelabs, is there any problem with just using a random serial off the net? Since they would have your IP and everything? I think I'll try again with a different file.

Well considering I worked for Cisco for 2 years and hold the ccna, ccda, ccnp, and passed my ccie written I can config them very well. They are too expensive and way under powered. Were dealing with broadband here and not medium enterprise sized companies. We have a full blown OC-48 backbone. Cox Communications is the company I work for. We just got rid of Excite @home and built our own backbone and provisioning system. I used to be a cisco fan till I came here and got to work with: Riverstone, ADC, and foundry gear. Cisco just cant hang anymore. Its like a bmw... looks nice.. handels well. but can be beat.

I'd like to jump in..
But I'm not understanding much of what you 2 are saying.. 94_Acc: I was wondering the same.. In the mean time, you could use the regular version.. If your cpu stops screwing up..
