Airline layoffs.

Well, as some of you know, I work for Delta Air Lines. I have been here for 8 years. They have transferred me from my home in Milwaukee Wisconsin, to Atlanta Georgia. At the time, I was not making any money, and had no benefits. I am currently making a good living, and love my job, and the company. However, last evening our COO siad that layoffs would be announced next week. It is estimated to be around 16,000 people, 6,000 here in Atlanta alone. They are going to offer early retirements, and Voluntary Release with benefits. I know 16,000 people will not go for this. Their is a good possibility that I could lose my job. I went throught the same thing back in 1995. I survuved that, and hope I can survive this time. Rumor is that anyone with under 5 years will be gon. This includes lots of my friends.

I am not writing this as a sob story. I am simply letting you know what is happening in my life. If I lose my job, I will probably end up in Tampa Florida, and will not be part of this board.

If that happens, I just want to let you all know that I have had fun.

Its sad about the layoffs. I work for Delta in Greater Cincinatti, Northern Kentucky and its going to hit the people here hard. Hopefully, you will still have your job because you've put in some quality time their. Hope everything works out for the best. Not only for you, but for everyone who the terrorism affects.

I have just gotten word that the 16,000 number is incorrect. They have not announced a number yet. They told the media that operations would be cut by 15 to 20%, and that we would have to reduce the head count. The media made up the 16,000 because that is 20% of our workforce. Bastards are scaring everyone.

I have heard 10000 all around. If you've been there that long, I believe you'll be fine. Hopefully someday soon the airline business can get back to where it was as far as people moved. The last couple of weeks have been terrible at work.

Thanks Racing Rice. You are right, it is going to be hard for all. The airline industry has already laid of over 100,000 people.

2000, They have not announced a number yet. They are going to make an announcement next week. Then they will offer the early retirements and the volunteer LOA. Then come the layoffs. I hope it does not happen.

I am lucky in the fact that I already have jobs lined up in Madison Wisconsin and Tampa Florida if anything happens. I think I would pick Tampa.

Good luck bro. I can definately relate, only I had no warning. Its good that you've already got some jobs lined up though.

Why wouldn't you be on the board?

Thanks for all the concern folks.

I have not heard anything yet. Should know today or tomorrow.

The reason that I will not be around the board is because if I move to Tampa, I will be staying with my mom for a month or so. I will not have a computer setup. However, I will be back!

Tomorrow at 11 a.m. is the big announcement. Lets hope it works out for the best. I have inside word from higher ups that it is going to be 11000. They are offering amazing early retirement packages for those who qualify. Good luck

The last I've heard was 8% layoffs in atlanta, 5% in Northern Kentucky Cincinatti-where I work. Hopefully everything will work out.

Yeah, 13,000 company wide. They are getting rid of 500 people from TechOps. That is what I work in. However, their are 11,000 employees. Hopefully the voluntary programs will grab a bunch of attention.
