A cap basically stores power so when your system hits it'll drain from the cap before your battery helping your lights to not dim. You should use 1 farad per 1000watts. When I had my 1500watt rms system I never had a cap but it wouldn't have hurt. Prices on caps are usually around $150-$200 for 1 farad, a box can range depending on type, thickness, material made, etc and that sub I believe retails for around $500? I think.
