Girl, 14, Sues MySpace.com Alleging Assault

Quote:
A 14-year-old girl who says she was sexually assaulted by another user of MySpace.com sued the social networking Web site Monday, claiming it does not take sufficient steps to protect underage members.

Full Story: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...84459.html?far

First off, better parenting would have helped prevent this.

Second, 30 million is not a reasonable amount for a suit. The girl went willingly to meet with this guy. Had the parents questioned where their daughter was going maybe this could've been avoided.

Third, this quote from the story again goes back to point #1:
Quote:
The girl says a 19-year-old man lied in his profile about being a senior on a football team to gain her trust and phone number.
Its ok for a 14 year old girl to go out with a senior in High School?

Lastly, fuck MySpace. I'm tired of that fad. Maybe this will be what breaks it down. Or at the very least, turns it into a moderated community.

Just my $0.03...

Well...I wouldn't call that bad parenting. I mean...you have to let a 14 year old have a certain amount of independence. How else will they ever develop a sense of responsibility? That being said, she's just flat out stupid. It's not Myspace's fault she a fucking idiot. You see things all over the place about internet predators and whatnot so she figured "what the hell, he seems on the level"? Bullshit. If anything, Myspace should sue her for being so god damn retarded.

Simply put she's an idiot that fell for her own mistakes. I mean people that you meet in person can tell you that they are a senior and on a football team as long as they somewhat resemble the act that they play.

It's the girls fault. Plain and simple. SHE created her online profile that left MILLIONS of perverts to view. SHE chatted with the guy. SHE met the guy. Sure she doesn't deserve to be sexually assulted. Don't think I'm saying that. But shit....lets get real. Steve your right. A 14 year old does need a little independence to let them build their personality and build their own ideal's and morals. As far as I'm concerned she shouldn't have been so stupid and met the guy by herself.

To the guy who sexually assulted her. May you die a horrible death.

The more I think about this them more I'm convinced that this girl's parents are behind this in a major way. There are some things in this life that are hard to accept. For instance, that your child is a complete and utter retard.

So what if the guy lied? Is it still ok for a 14 year old to meet up with a high school senior? People who meet online and then in person generally have one of only a couple things on their minds. If it's not for a quick fuck, it's usually something along those lines. If she was indeed assaulted (many underage people, particularly girls, will cry assault or rape if their parents find out about such events regardless of their consent), that's a shame...but she put herself in that position. Am I saying she asked for it? No. But she was certainly foolish enough to put herself in harm's way and that is in n o way Myspace's fault. Myspace is not your parent. It does not have any responsibility for your safety.

Yeah...I graduated high school a few months before I turned 17. But that's certainly not the norm. There's a reasonable assumption that the guy is old enough that she doesn't need to be fooling around with him.

I agree that this is a parenting issue rather then a myspace security issue. I think we as humans need to be more responsible and aware of our enviroment and what is going on in it. Rather then always trying to blame these large corporations when somethings goes wrong.

If a kid takes a gun to school, should it be the gun makers fault? I don't think so.

If a kid decides to do stunts that they saw on TV, should that be the fault of the TV station, or worse, the TV manufactuer? I don't think so.

And if some stupid teenage whore meets a guy on the internet and meets up with him somewhere, should that the be domain owners fault or the fault of the Internet provider or how about the computer manufactuer? Bullshit.. I don't think so.

For some reason I can't help but think the parent(s) are involved in this. It just seems to f-ing convenient.

The sad part is that MySpace will likely settle this out of court. You have to look at what they are being sued for, not why. They lack controls to keep minors out. Not saying they should have to police everyone, but....

I hate MySpace anyhow.....

There's no way Myspace would be held accountable. Why not sue Xanga or Livejournal for the same thing? The fact of the matter is that if you put up a profile of yourself online you're just opening yourself up to such things if you're underage. Myspace should have an 18+ rule, but then again who's to stop some 14 year old dipshit from lying over a computer. Even if people were honest, would that stop things like sexual assault from happening? No...because there will always be creepy weird people on the webernet. The key is to use one's judgement when coordinating such contacts. Myspace can't be held accountable just because you're borderline retarded no more than Nextag can because an online retailer they have listed screwed you. It's all about personal accountability.
