Any Folders?
Just wondering if any of you do the Folding@Home ...
Quote:
I just started late last week. Its for a good cause. It doesn't suck up CPU power. You can run it while playing games, surfing etc. It basically runs with a low priority so it only gets the leftovers. Of course if you're not doing anything, it will grab all the cpu power it can. Anyhow, I fold for Team #32 which is www.overclockers.com. #1260 on my team in just a matter of days, #56221 overall. My Stats So if you fold, what's you stats? If you don't fold, what are you waiting for? This a very worthy cause and it doesn't kill your CPU (like I said). http://folding.stanford.edu

Nothing complicated. Basically what Stanford does is utilize everyone's 'excess' computing power to help understand protein folding. You don't need to know what protein folding is other than misfolding causes some of the diseases I listed above. It takes alot of CPU power to perform the calculations. Maybe THIS LINK will help a litle more. I hope that helps somewhat.

Hmm.
I don't think I can explain it any better. I'm pretty sure 94_Accord_Ex folds as well.

I thought about posting this here before, but I never did. I do fold with a 3 computers, so does Maxvla if he pops his head in here.
Its a distributed computing project. Stanford is studying how proteins fold (remember Biology?) and this is key to curing some diseases such as Altzheimers (sp?) and some forms of cancer. You simply download the program, enter in a username and hopefully team #32 and it does everything for you. No more interaction is necessary. It gets new work units, etc. Check out the folding forum @ www.overclockers.com for more info, or the folding.stanford.edu site has a forum also. I used to run Seti, but I fold now because disease has affected my life. Family members have had cancer, and now my best friend's cousin just passed away at the age of 19 after a battle with cancer Folding is for a good cause, and I encourage all of you to sign up.

Hey C_A, did you get your work computers signed up yet? That will be really nice!

I have my workstation & my laptop going. I also have a dual P4 XEON 1.8Ghz that I'm testing the console version on. I had to use the console since its a dual processor. Man is it a powerhouse. Nothing like killing 2 work units at one time.. Also I'm going to have to switch to console on my home computers too. Can't play Battlefield 1942 or Warcraft III with it running. Odd, but fixable.

On duallies, some people run more than 2 instances to get full processor usage. You might want to make sure that both procs. are maxxed out.

It sounds good..but i don't really understand it...
Do you need to have an internet connection?... does it work on networked comps? will it slow down the network? maybe i could get my school to "fold" or whatever... What does fold mean anyway?

Yes yes, no (only uses net to connect after a work unit is done - depending on work unit, 4-48 hours. It will auto dial if you'd like. Your school folding would be great! But learn how to do it yourself first before you try to set it up yourself. I HIGHLY recommend reading the FAQs in the folding forum @ www.overclockers.com It will answer all of your questions.

Glad you got that going. You'll climb to the top in no time. I'm rising pretty fast, and I have 3 full time/1 part time computer. You'll kick my ass Come on people, I know you want to fold! It ONLY uses your idle time on the computer and won't slow it down at all.

Its not that technical...
You don't have to understand protein folding to know that its a good cause. Nothing hard about the setup either. And like its been said, it will not slow you down at all. Currently #37539 overall. #1013 on Team 32. I'm coming for that #1 spot soon baybee! I still haven't gotten it installed on any other servers at work... Hoping to be in the 700's by the end of the week. NEED MORE POWER!

You think you're flying now, wait until the Gromacs core is used again.
Come on people, why not use your computers for a good cause? The program ONLY runs when you're not using it for something else.

This link is for the text only console. Sits open in a DOS window. You can download a program called EMIII @ www.em-dc.com if you want to hide it, view your stats, etc.
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...AH3Console.exe Save the program in a folder off of the root drive c:\FAH3 The first time you run it, it will ask you questions. Username (just make one up and type it in), Team #(PUT 32!!!), Change advanced options?: yes fah/gah/no preferance?: fah priority: idle proc. % usage: 100 That should be it. If you mess up, you can restart the program with a shortcut that reads FAH3Console.exe -config Any questions just ask.

You're #241 on the team now. Still not too bad. Why not start up again? The team really could use some help getting ahead now.

Console. That's all it does, just sits there. Let it run forever. I'd suggest checking out www.em-dc.com for a program called EMIII that will take it to a nice little icon in the system tray. It also keeps track of your stats, etc.
