It looked like a harmless, big looping kick, but it curled enough to find the corner of the Italian net. The shot by Milan Rapaic stunned the favoured team and brought Croatia back from a goal down to defeat Italy 2-1.

The marker came just 3 minutes after Ivica Olic had evened the score. Christian Vieri tallied for the losing side, leaping over a defender to head in a Christiano Doni pass in the 55th minute of play. With the victory, Croatia remains alive in Group G action. They sit tied at 3 points along with Italy and Mexico, with the Italians ahead on goal differential. On Thursday, Italy takes on Mexico, which first plays Sunday against Ecuador.

In other action, Brazil did the expected, dumping China 4-0 with goals from the 4 R’s. Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo all found the net to take the Chinese out of contention. Brazil, meanwhile, is a robust 2-0.

Also, South Africa took a huge step toward the second round with a 1-0 win over Slovenia. South Africa needs just one point from its final Group B match with Spain on Wednesday to go through. Slovenia has been eliminated after two games.
