I'm seriously considering one right now. TDK is my current choice. No question on the media; you must get both + and -. + is likely going to be the adopted standard, but there are many players (inlcluding some ps2's) that only like DVD-Rs.

I'm not going to wait for the double sided stuff. 4.7gb per disc is hard to pass up. once we get the 9 gb ds stuff, I'll buy that too...when its $100

I have some Optorite drive, its a dual format drive, so it will do either DVD-R or DVD+R, which is kinda nice. The only thing is, when I got it (when the dual formats first came out) it was expensive, and another thing that I dont like is that it only seems to work with certain brands of media. I wish that I would have forked up the extra $$ an gotten the Sony dual format, I hear they burn really nice and will accept alomst all brands of media.

Glad to hear you like it. I was going to go with the Plextor, but even now that it has a huge rebate, I'm still going to get the 2500a...

I've got a TDK (don't ask what model...I'm too lazy to find the box and look). It's worked well so far...but I've only done data discs since I haven't figured out how to encode DVD (MPEG-2) files from AVI files just yet.

www.tmpgenc.net

^^^ DVD author and TMPGEnc will do everything you need.

I went with the NEC2500A btw and it is a great unit.

I've got TMPGenc Pro and it will create the files but it won't merge them (for MPEG2 stuff it creates seperate audio and video streams). So far as I can tell it won't put them together. There may be something I've overlooked...but I've been fuckin with it forever trying to get it to do DVDs. VCDs turn out good though...depending on the codec (read my post in this section for explanation).
