Best way to purchase a car in America
From all your personal experiences buying a used car whats the best way to go about purchasing a good used car?
Now of course cheapest price is not always best, but I'm talking about value here. Heck even being able to purchase an extended warrany might be worth my while. |

I'm sure it's not much different in the states than it is in the great white north. Do the test drive, find what you want, and start deciding what you're willing to pay. I'd also check into the transferability of warranties from country to country if you're not planning to move here. I've got no idea how that works, if at all. I'm also not sure if it's any harder to register a car bought here and driven there. To be honest, I've never really thought about any of that stuff.

For used cars, I buy the ones I'm already familiar with i.e. friends' car.

Ok well in Canada we have autotrader.ca which is an amazing way to find cars, I find the US version to be horrible.

yeah autotrader died in the US... it was popular for a while but not long...
There are TONS of used car sites in the US... Cars.com is one that's pretty big... Bargainnews.com but I think that's NE only... DEFINATELY look into the used car warranties... there are a LOT of companies out there that will just sell you a warranty on a car you buy from whoever. My brother did that and it's worked out GREAT for him.

Depends on the dealer...
Some are great... some (like the last place I worked at) Sold salvage title cars... They used to do ALL sorts of unbelievable shit... my personal favorite was when the immobilizer keys wouldn't work right... they'd just super glue the transponder to the reciever so it was useless.

Check consumer guides. Check Carfax. Read message boards. Find out what the trouble spots are and besure to check the car over. Having a mechanic check the car over is always a decent idea.
The nice part about used cars is the fact that you can usually get the dealer to work on the price. Just make sure you know what you are getting (how much the car is worth, etc.) Then start the haggling. If you do not have a trade-in it is easier to get them to come off the price. If you DO have a trade-in you will probably want to focus more on the price of the trade-in then the car itself. Chances are the more they knock off the car then less of a trade-in your going to get. Read the classifieds and the local dealer guides. Around here we have Automart and AutoExtra that are a lot more dealer focused then Autotrader is. Those maybe good in your area as well. I highly recommend some sort of extended warranty for used cars. Since you never know what your going to get. When you go to purchase the car, make sure you know what kind of interest rate your getting. Some dealers will get a percentage of the loan if they can sell a higher APR. Do let them get those high interest rates in there!

RR thats some good advice. I think I will end up borrowing directly from my credit union to get the lowest rate possible.
