My new CRX

So I bought a neat little 1986 CRX (blue/grey with red stripe in the middle).
One question I have is: why are there so many tubes in this motor??? There is a little box on the firewall behind the air cleaner that has 13 1/4 inch tubes coming out of it! Is this California emissions? I think its the 1.5L CVCC engine. I'm still trying to figure it out.
But the motor is super clean, all those tubes look brand new. In fact, most of the motor looks brand new.
