Engine fuel requirements and engine types

Hey Guys, I was hoping to get some help. I'm presently thinking about swapping out the D16Y8 engine in my 96 civic si for something more powerful, maybe a B16 but I have a list of criteria that I want for the new engine. I wanted something with around 160-170 horses, and that's descent on gas. But here's where I've been having problems, I want an engine that runs on regular gas and not the higher octane gas because I drive about 100 km to and from work each day and that would get expensive the way gas prices are going. So does anyone know where or how I could find out what engines take what type of fuel? or can someone suggest engine types that meet that criteria? Any help would be appreciated.

the b16 is a good choice. it uses cheap, regular gas, and it got the best MPG ratio i have seen.

B16 requires higher octane gas bro. People just chose not to..... All DOHC VTEC does.

160-170 whp B16 requires modification. You are better off getting a Type-R which normally dynos around 170+ at the wheels. This goes back to my comment above......... Higher octane....

Thanks for the info thermal. But are there any engine choices that produce 160+ whp on regular octane gas? Like I said I drive a lot and I don't want to get killed at the pump, that’s why I want an engine that runs on regular gas.

If guys are running regular gas in the B16, how much wear is that creating on the engine? Is the pinging severe or does the lower octane really have no effect on the engine?

There is no Honda motor that I know that can produce 160+ whp on stock form that does NOT use high octane.

I dont really know how to answer your questions Sparrow. I just never thought of it that way. You are basically asking for a reliability, low cost, and power but risk efficiency. I dont think that is achievable on any motor tho. You may have to look at some domestic options. Goodluck

im sure you could run a B16 with regular pump gas and be fine. i dont see where you would need 93+ in a B16. plus it makes the power you want and is reliabe. plus the aftermarket for the B series motors is unbelievable.

Of course you can regular gas.... the question is, are you supposed to? Like I said before, no Honda DOHC VTEC motor are supposed to use regular gas....

B16 is 160 at the Flywheel. Dyno on those are only yielding between 135-145whp.... and barely any torque...

Doesn't the v6 accord make 250hp on 89 oc?

Those should be SOHC. Plus, I think Sparrow is referring more to an 87 octane.....

Thanks for the input guys. So let me ask you this, how about if I do get a b16 and run 87 octane gas in it, how will that effect the engine? I've heard of pinging, but how bad would it be in the B16 and will running the 87 reduce the longevity of the engine? Like I said I before I'd like an engine with more power, without getting killed at the pumps, and I want it to last for hopefully 100 000+ km. Any suggestions?

it wouldnt hurt it at all imo. depends on how you drive the car.

good read, but still i think my opinion stands. you can run lower octane on a B16 and not hurt it. i havent heard or seen anything cuased by running it.

That blurb on octane was very informative...thanks. But I'm still questioning the effects of pinging on the engine's longevity. The last thing I wantto do is drop an engine in and then kill it in a couple of months! Not sure who to beleive...is there a honda engine master out there that can answer all my questions?

ever heard the saying "a rotary will knock once, and only once"

wanna know why? Cause pinging, knocking, whatever, kills engines. Granted you may get away with a little on a honda, but why would you want to? They have cast pistons that break ringlands like they're perforated, and if you ask me, paying another 10 cents per gallon is cheap insurance when you've shelled out a few G's on a motor.

I am NOT saying that you can NOT use 87 octane at all. I am just saying what Honda recommends you to run. They based their R&D on a higher octane. The ECU controls the A/F ratio via that octane mixture.

When does pinging, knock, detonation occur? It occurs when timing (which directly affects combustion, which is a mixture of Air, Fuel, and Ignition) gets out of whack. So, yes pinging will eventually kill your motor.

I would really think about what JDMfantasy just said......

So I have a little problem I was hoping someone could help me with. I just finished installing angel eyes headlights in my 96 civic and they look sick!...I love them. But my kenwood deck isn't working now for some reason. It won't turn on and it looks like there is no power going to it. I already checked the fuse and it was fine, and I also checked that the deck was getting power and it is....so now I’m not sure what the hell is going on. I pulled out the deck to wire my switch for my lights behind it, and I notices a little bit of arcing from connection that I don't use that are suppose to go to speakers,....so I’m not sure if that might have shorted it or something? Is there a fuse inside maybe? Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.
