1)Take out the spark plug
2)Screw in the tester 3)Turn over the car untill the meter stops moving (test it 3 times to make sure the number is about the same 4) Take out the tester and put the sparkplug back in 5) Repeat steps 1-4 And I have no idea about the normal compression for your car |

I feel sorry for your wallet. Repairs are going to be costly.

missing steps
car needs to be warmed up thorttle needs to be held wide open car needs to be turned over with the starter IGNITION MUST BE DISABLED do one cylinder at a time and make sure to put the plug back in the last cylinder you performed the test on if you have oil on your plugs you need to replace your valve cover gasket and grommets. FWIW unless you have totally bent valves i have NEVER seen a honda have 22psi in any cylinder and still be able to run at all. Jeremy |

I'm also amazed the car runs...I've never seen a compression test come out anywhere near that low. I've only done those tests on V8 cars, but they've almost always been over 100psi unless they're low comp. blower cars or cars from the earlier 80's when compression ratios were so low you could probably run your car on Pepsi. But 20psi...that's scary.

definately sounds like your valve cover gasket has gone, and that could also be the cause of your low compression. is your head gasket leaking?

valve cover gasket IS NOT going to cause loss in comp...
It will cause oil to be above the threads of the s.p. though... Are you SURE you have the throttle open ALL THE WAY when you're testing this??? Also I would STRONGLY suggest pulling the fuse for the FUEL system as well as the ignition... no need to be soaking the cylinder walls with gas... Those numbers are so bad I'm gunna assume you are doing something VERY wrong... even with NO rings it should be putting out better numbers than that... they're usually around 180-210. Are you tightening the comp. tester in GOOD and tight? cuz it may just be allowing pressure to pass by it... Also are you SURE you are cranking it for long enough? the needle will bounce and hold progressively more and more each crank. I've NEVER heard of doing it with the engine hot though... it's an aluminum head and it could be easily damaged... I've heard of driving it first to ensure a good battery charge but I wouldn't want to get the head hot then pull the plugs... Could be wrong though... Also you may want to get a leak-down tester too... because that way you can try to force some pressure in there and see how quick it comes out or if you can even get any in there.... good luck.

Nonov is right...I don't see how a bad valve cover gasket could drench the firing end of a spark plug. My money's on a blown head gasket.
