1989 LXi Accord Check engine light on

How can I "read" what is happening with this car. In my 1990 i can Short the blue connector under the glove box and basically count the blinks of the Check engine light or look at the led on the passenger footwell and count the blinks of the led.
How can I do this on the 1989 LXi? I don't know where the led is nor what to short to see the orange check engine light on the dashboard blink.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

it will be located under the drivers seat(in a box on the floor) on the back side hidden under a little door to cover it

Thanks
BTW this is my wife's car, she told me that the car began to hesitate, after about 5 minutes of running in the morning (hadn't reached normal temp). The check engine light came on, the car still worked but very roughly. She got to work and then in the afternoon she started the car to get home and everything was working normally. I then looked for the ECU codes but no blinks were displayed. The car is working fine as of now.
The same story happened about a year ago with this car.
Doesn't this ECU keeps a track or memory of events or failures? The 1990 I drive does, so even if the problem is gone (check engine light is off) the codes can be read (blinking led).
