Automatic Shifter Locked!
Help! I recently got a 99 Civic EX, automatic and everytime I put it in park I need the key to depress the shift lock to move it out of park. This happens everytime regardless if the car is running or not. Car runs and shifts fine so I am wondering if it is locking for a reason or it is just broken?

I don't hear any clicking when the engine is running and press on the brake. How do you check a shifter lock solenoid other than replacing it?

well remove the center console and with the engine running press the brake. if it moves it works if not it might be broken or it might be the ignition switch or the transaxle position switch. very hard to explain, very easy to do
