Acord Oil
In my Accord LX 1990, I've used castrol Synthec blend and it consumes oil and even under very hard sustained acceleration it smokes, switched to shell mineral oil in the same grade 20w50 and works fine as does Honda oil.
Has anyone tried other oils and can recommend somethig that has worked well with you? I'll like to try shell's synthetic blend, any experience on this? My wife has a 1989 LXi and runs perfect on castrol. |

...i've used mobil supersyn drive-clean blend since i got my accord, but this week i switched to mobil 1 synthetic, which is truly amazing stuff.
were you using the castrol syntec for high mileage engines? i used that in my 94 camry (198k miles) with no problems. also, does your car really require 20w50? my g/f has an 84 accord and it uses 10w30 or 5w30 (as does mine, which is a 99). |

I use 5W30 in mine... but anyway. Some people have trouble using synthetic in high mileage engines due to the fact that it can "flow" out of any tiny cracks that normal oil couldn't. If normal oil works just fine, use it.

i don't think you have a problem burning it. it's more that your gaskets are plastified by now, and they tend to leak a lot. i just replaced mine on thursday, and so far it did not burn one ounce of it.

Which gaskets? I was thinking of changing valve seals just to test what happens. But after I change to shell's mineral oil it stopped consuming oil. The car doesn't seem to have leaks, at least it does not leave oil drops on the floor. Supposedly the car has 100000 miles, I'll like to use a synthetic blend but I'm not sure if my problem was because of synthetic blend or because of castrol. Next change I'll try shell's blend to se how it works, it is available in 15w50.
How can I know if 20w50 is o.K for my car instead of 10w30 as recommended above? Wouldn't the car consume more oil if I use a lighter grade? |
