well i need a new motherboard for my desktop pc i have sitting at home. mine is about 5 years old, and it's a amd k6-2. well i want too keep as much as i can from the old computer, so i have 2 big ATA drives a cdrom and cd-rw, and the pc133 memort. i wouldn't mind having the sound and network bundled in it so i am open to sugestions. the computer is not gonna be used for intense gaming at all, but it will be used as a file server and running some office applications, also might be used as a media center. any reccomendations ? i don't care if it's AMD or P4. i just don't know which brands are good.

Jesus K6-2!

Pick up an epox, I've used them for the past few years, and their diagnostic LEDs give you error codes so you can easily see whats wrong.

If you want I have a spare xp1600 I could send ya.

*edit*I have the EPoX EP-8RDA6+Pro in my desktop and love it.

I've heard good things about ePox. If you are into reading reviews, anandtech.com is amazing.

So lets see...you need a machine for office apps, data storage, etc. It all depends how much you want to spend.

For a very decent machine, allocate $1000. For a budget, but still reasonable machine, allocate about $500-600.

Give me an idea of what you want to spend, and I'll give you an idea of what you need to buy.

Are you planning on using your old monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc.?

As for motherboard brands:

I am not happy with Gigabyte. Their software sucks, BIOS updater sucks, manual sucks, and for some reason the SATA support sucks on my board.

I've had good luck with Asus.

Intel and Foxconn are basically the same, and both reliable. The price is right, great support. Overall solid boards, especially for the non-gamer.

I've had my Asus motherboard a year or two now and it's been good to me.. No problems whatsoever.. I thought I fried it because when I first put my computer together I forgot to put the little things the motherboard sits on in between it and the case but it's still fine

well i don't know how much i am looking to spend, i just can't wait for the desktop to finish whatever it is doing forever. mostly it is going to be billing and working on my website, so it is gonna be used for graphics too. i looked at newegg and they have the new 64bit boards out there but i doubt i'll do that since i need to run some old 16bit apps. yeah, the monitor, the mouse and the keyboard are staying since they are basically brand new.

and dingo i have a p4 laptop so the desktop is not such a big deal right now

well, so far i built a mock-up pc for you on newegg. This is an AMD machine, but ive never actually built an amd machine (in a long time). when i have time later tonight i'll put together a rock solid intel box for you.

well that is just a suggestion, you could go many different ways. the 3200 64 venice is probably the best bang for the buck right now.

and after doing some more reading today, the asus a8n is very good board. I was looking at an sli model for myself, but the non-sli would be a good option for you.

video card is up to you: onboard, low-end, or mid-range, high-end. i have a 6600GT i bought for 165. A very nice card, but maybe too much power for what you will be using it for.

post what you are planning on buying, and ill critique it for you.
