New wheels and tires

My car is a 1990 LX Accord (185/70 r 14) I'll like to install new wheels and tires. My question is, should I buy 195/60 r15 or can I go bigger (205/50 r16 or 2__/45 r17). This because where I live (Costa Rica) roads aren't very smooth and are filled with potholes, so I don't know if the lower profile I go the worst it would be to my suspension and the ride will become harsh. Even if the roads where O.K, would 16 or 17 wheels harm the suspension? I know handling will improve but maintenance (joints, shocks etc) will increase?

Thanks

i think you could go with 17" 205/45/17 the tire is gonna be bigger but the cushioning will be allright.
