running atf thru the fpr will clean the carbon deposits from the chamber, and valve, thus allowing for better sealing, and avoiding predetonation. also it will lower the engine temperature a few degrees. If you really want to do it, do it in a remote area, where the neghbours won't call the fire department. if your plugs are good, and you intend to keep them make sure you use some old ones cause you are gonna have them fouled, and will have to buy new ones.
another thing that i found that works really good is LUCAS OIL carbon cleaner, whick is like 3 at the autoparts stores.

Another good thing i have done is (yes im serious about this) fill the crankcase up entirly with ATF and let the car idle for 10-15 minutes or so. Its will clean out a ton of shit from the oil passages on high milage cars. If the engine you are cleaning is really dirty it may be a good ideal to drop the pan and check the oil pick up before starting again incase there is a shit in front if it causing it to clog when you start it up.
