VXD problems

Ok...so I'm using this shitty computer with shitty Win 98 on it while I'm back in KC. The problem is that about 15 minutes or so of using it, it throws me a bunch of VXD errors and either crashes or locks up completely. I guess I have a vague idea of what VXD controllers do...something about virtual drives and other bullshit. My question is how can I make them go away? Or, for that matter, can I make them go away and still retain normal computer usage. The blue screen of death doesn't really tell me where the problems are and Microsoft's help page is like reading stereo instructions. Fuck. Anyone got an idea?

VxD errors are bad news. Honestly, whenever I encountered those, it was a reformat/reload job. It was often more trouble than it was worth to try to fix them, and was never just one that was bad.

If you have the name of the file, that's a start. google the name, and see what you come up with. If it just dumps hex at you, thats not very helpful.

You could try starting in safe mode, and once you're there, you could try to begin the repair process, that is IF you know which file is hosed.

I remember McAfee Viruscan always had VxD problems with 98 machines, but your problem could be anything.

Wow Aaron...you're good. This IS a Win 98 machine running old ass McAfee shit. The PC is my mom's but I use it when I'm back here. She's getting a new one soon (bout damn time), but I'm trying to figure out a way to make this one run for more than 15 minutes at a time as long as I'm stuck with it for now.

And yes...it just throws hex at me. It'll say shit like the error is in "VXD VMM 00004338". I assume this is all registry shit...and I'm not fucking with the registry. Then I downloaded some program that is supposed to find registry problems. When it came to VXD section of the scan, it showed no errors. It also wanted to move around files like autoexec.bat. Piece of shit computer!!

vxd problems are the shit. there is a new program in town that's supposed to take care of the registry called ccleaner. i would try to clean the registry and maybe run sfc.exe to replace some of the files but nothing works as good as a format/install

you could try running msconfig, and disable as much stuff as you can in the startup section, especially mcafee. It's a long shot, but it may work.

click start, then run. in the field, just typ e"msconfig". you want the last tab that says "startup". Uncheck as much stuff as possible, but I would start with all the mcafee entries. apply, and reboot.
