custom painting?

how much does it cost to get a all-round paint job?

with the color, the clear-coating, ect.

do you think it'll cost over a grand?

i'm thinking about a color similar to this(there's too much "factory" reds out)

oh, and about how long would it take?

a day or two?

we just had my brother's teg changed from white to ebp today. the car looks awesome and i still need to wet sand the car and buff it. it looks like stock on the corner the guy at the shop showed us what to do. i think my brother paid a bit over 500 to have this done but we sanded the car down

My friend's dad owns a body shop, and I have asked him several times. He says "To get it done right, you're looking $3500 to $4000"... ouch. But that's dis-assembling the car and sanding down to the metal, re-primer, re-paint, and several clear coats. That is for a factory-quality paint job.

On the other hand, SlowEJ6 got a pretty sweet deal. I think he paid just over $300 (for labor) plus the paint and got his whole car redone. It looked pretty good except for a few small details. But since the car had a paint-guarentee, he just took it back until the guy got it right...

When all is said and done, when it comes to getting a paintjob, you get what you pay for.

laying the paint isn't a problem. it's all in the before and after prep. i can get any car painted in 2 hrs and look awesome but at least 10 hrs before that of sanding and filling dents

I remember hearing something on TLC (or maybe it was
Discovery Channel) about custom hot rods. (BTW. Christopher Titus is the man). They said something like 1600 hours in the prep work, 8 hours of painting, and another 500 hours of finishing work....

Yea, painting is easy. The hard part is sanding and cleaning and taping...

yeah it was that show rides on tlc about chip foose (sp???) that grand national was awesome thou, that tan one) plus the t-bird came out sweet. not that's what i call good taste

Man this sux. I will never be thankful enough that my dad has a shop & does all this stuff for me for free!

I can also never be thankful enough that he's good.... his cars win this HUGE car show we have here every year called Starbird...

for a real good paintjob you NEED a clean room and a baking room period.

If the paint is just left to dry on it's own you'll get ALL SORTS of contamination... even in a sealed up garage... much less outdoors or in a garage with a heating system...

my buddy had a guy who works at his station at nights (who works full time at a bodyshop) paint his car... and it took TONS of prep and TONS of finishing and it still came out all flawed because it was done in a recirculated air environment...

dust settles on the paint it doesn't dry properly... I mean you can get away with it sometimes but if your going to have it done for you then just pay the money up front...

the only way to save is to do most of the prep yourself... but that all depends on how confident you can do that well.

I'm glad you started this thread because I'm looking to get my car custom painted as well. I haven't decided on a color yet and I don't want anything drastic. Anyone have any cool suggestions? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg either, but I still want it to look nice.

Well, when I finally get some money together, I am going to get my car repainted. The paint on the DX simply doesn't hold up in this Florida weather.
I was thinking of something like a silver to black fade. The car would be silver in front and fade to black in the back. I think it would look awesome from afar, but up close, I am not quite sure how it would look.
If not that (may be a bit too flashy) I would go for a gun-metal or pewter color like SlowEJ6's... I like that color alot.

hmm...i want the one i posted or red mixed with silver(to give it that shiney look?)

but i know i'm not painting it myself, or even sanding it.

that's why i asked how much it'll cost.

and isn't it better to get everything first? spoiler, bumper, side-skirts, ect. and THEN get it painted?

If you get the body kit painted at the same time as the car, it will ensure that the panels match in color, plus labor would be a bit less...

yeah.

it would be foolish to get it painted now, then 3 months later get the front/rear bumper, side-skirt, and the spoiler painted...

and do you know if it costs extra for those "extra" spaces? like the side-skirts, spoilers, ect? or is by the amount of paint? hours?

it depends on where you do it! my brother n law custom painted mine, flames were his idea but yeah id say it was less than a thousand to do, supplies cost maybe 300 -500$
