I'm not sure about imports, but I know American cars have a heat riser valve in the exhaust manifold, that closes and lets the exhaust gases to recirculate until the engine reaches operating temp. This may be the cause.

well first of all, he hasnt said he has a turbo, and it wouldnt matter anyway

second, why is this a bad thing? If you have actual smoke coming from the back of your car at idle, something sounds wrong.

third, are talking about starting it and just letting it run? or are you talking about while your driving? when you are driving you will have all sorts of visible exhaust "smoke", but when you are just idling, I wouldnt expect to see much.

honestly, this sounds pretty weird, and I suppose I would have to be there to know exactly the problem. But unless you are having some other problem with your car, like it not running right, eating gas, backfiring, etc. then i wouldnt worry about this.
