Need help with personal webspace!
Ok...this is seriously pissing me off. I just activated the webspace my ISP allots for it's customers (a whopping 10MBs) but I can't figure out how to send the links I'm trying to use. I've uploaded 2 MP3 files and, in the course of trying to find a way to create links for them, all I can do is start downloading them (kinda useless since I'm the one who uploaded them). With the pictures all I have to do is click on the file and it takes me to the pic and gives me a useable web address. Does anyone know of a way I can give people links to the MP3 files? I figured it'd just be myispname.com/mymembername/file.mp3 but that doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

If you link to an mp3 file and it downloads it when you click on the link, everything is working fine. Isn't that what you want your friends to do?

Yeah I'm failing to see exactly what it is you're looking to do here.
Are you looking for the "Download vs. Open From Location" dialog box? That's a personal setting in IE you can change IIRC. Of course pictures should just open when you click the link, but mp3 files should automatically download or pop up that box. b |

My mustake...should've clarified. I can only access the file from the file manager, not from the main site. I've never been good with HTML so I haven't actually setup a page yet...just have them hosting the file. Just for shits and giggles I uploaded a pic to it and used it in my thread over in Shifting Gears and it worked fine. I just can't figure out how to make a link from the MP3 files.
Edit: I suppose I could give them my file manager page, but, while these are fairly good friends, I don't want to go around handing out my email/webspace password.

You link to them the same way if you're just typing the address into the browser. Some hosts won't allow you to link .mp3s, maybe that's the problem.

Yeah, that's what I was about to point out. Ever wonder why some sites list MP3 files as .txt files and force you to change the extension? Try that. Change the extension and see if you can download them from the main page. If so, blame it on your host and explain the new extension to your friends. b |

That didn't pan out either. I've tried everythnig. I noticed that when downloading the file it lists it as filename.mpga, so I tried that extention...nothing. Tried .txt...nothing. Even called the ISP and asked them how to do it and they basically told me there's nothing I can do about it...the guy didn't even know whether or not they allow MP3 hosting. I could convert it to WAV, but one file would more than take up my 10MB limit. F@ckers.

Just put a random .exe file up and see if you can link to it.

Wow...that's weird. With the .exe file all I had to do was manually input the address and it worked file. Now I'm just pissed.

Then the server just won't support .mp3 and some other files. You link them the exact same way.

Hmmm...well...does anyone know of any free webspace hosting that DOES support MP3 files?
