What's a clean sounding, mid-prices sub/amp setup? Looking to buy...
Hey guys, I'm giving what I have of a system to my brother soon and I'm looking for a new sub/amp setup. Probably a single 10 or 12 and a decent amp. I'd like to be able to buy it at a discount site like Ikesound to save some money. I'd prefer to spend under $500 for the sub/amp/box/wiring.
What should I look for? I don't really know too much about this stuff anymore. Thanks

I was looking at the Alpine Type R DVC sub... I guess I'd wire it down to 2 ohms most likely. How's it sound? I'm not really into loudness, just nice, clean bass.

well my bass is hugeee...i have the 12inch Type S 900 watt max...but i dont have my trunk or doors soundproofed..(whats that stuff called? dynomat?) it sounds pretty good right now (little rattling somewhere)...and i only have the amp (gain) running...I think at a 1/4 power or even less with the sub on the lowest setting and it still pounds like hell...lower volume its real clean sounding..

Are the type R's a better sub than that Type S? I thought they were, but maybe not...
Where are some other opinions? I know a lot of you guys have systems...

Whoa JP! Good to hear from you Anyway, I have at the moment some trashed Bazooka tubes (got for free) and a cheap Sony amp. What I would like is clean, tight bass. I listen to mostly rock, but every now and then I'd like the subs to be able to get a work out and play some deep bass. I think a sealed box would be the best for this? I'm only changing out this part of the system for now, but in the future I'd like to do more.

You should go with a sealed box. Takes up less space & is usually better suited for tighter(rock/alt) bass.
from Ikesound amp : KAC-8101D (135$) sub : 12" Alpine R (the dual 4ohm model) (99$) Sounds good? When installing it, you'll need to adjust the gain carefully cause the amp is a little more powerful than the sub...

im a big fan of 10's, due to there size and cleaner sounding bass. ive got a rockford power punch dvc(from... 1999 or 2000 i think) that is more than perfect for what i need.

Thanks for the suggestions JP and Chris...
I'm definitely having a hard time deciding between 10s and 12s. Will I still be able to get tight bass from a 12? If so, I'd rather go that route. That amp is priced very low. Is it still decent quality? Will getting a better amp not matter much with a cheaper sub anyway? Blah, I don't know much about this stuff Also, I don't think I want to build the box for this and I don't want to pay a shop. I'll look up the sub specs for volume requirements, but what's a good place online to buy a box? Thanks guys

go with a Kicker Solo-Baric L7 12 inch, you can find them all day on ebay, get a box designed for it, and go with a d-class mono amp (1 Channel), because it wont heat up as much and they are pretty compact.

I have a basic MTX thunder series (2- 12's) and RF punch 350 amp. I like it but i really rather have 10's. There ae so many cheap stuff out there. I bought a 2- 12 RF sub for $50 . Then I used this U.S. Acoustic 2 channel 1000 watt amp (paid $100) mated with a 4 channel (old and cheap ass) JVC head and it f'n kicks like crazy!
But dont listen to me, I dont know much about car stereo stuff. I can wire it up and install it, but I really have no clue on what is good out there... |

1 x 12" = for you That amp will be fine.. If you plan on pushing it hard for extended amounts of time, then maybe something better would be needed. Actually for 10$ more, you can get the Alpine MRD-M301.. Which is a better amp.. Then you can brag about being all decked out in Alpine.. But seriously the Alpine amp would be cool.

Haha, bragging isn't my style, but I know what you mean
Thanks for all of the help. So do you know where I could get a box online?

I havent a clue.. I usually build mine. You should check your local low/mid quality electronics stores.. They usually carry of quality boxes.. Avoid departement stores (Best Buy / Circuit city / Good Guys...), it'll be too expensive for nothing..

That's ok, I'll find a box somewhere, or maybe just build one myself.
With that Alpine amp, should I wire the sub down to 2 ohms then?

try building one.. ive seen people use everything from wood to fiberglass... you want something unique... and by you building it.. you can either make it an exact box or you can put whatever shape you want. Not to mention.. you wont have to brag it'll do it all on its own

I've always thought that 3/4" MDF was the best material to use to just build a simple box. Is that right?

Yes, since the amps needs to see 2ohms to put out full power.. Wire each 4ohm voice coil in parallel, which yields to 2 ohms.
