intake mods
i was curious, what is a fair price to pay for a short ram intake? any recommendations on where to purchase, what to purchase?
i don't want a cold air, because i live in snow country and don't want to suck in water. i'm not much of a car guy, so 3 hp won't matter to me. any recommendations? ===================== i've been thinking about the dc sports dac. here's why: i hear they are good (but i come from a motorcycle background and i understand that companies can get great reps by over charging and spreadig their own rumors or living off yesterday's success) i want a reusable filter i like loud cars and i don't want to have to rip it out in two years because it's crapped up. what about those cheap ones on ebay? i don't think i want to go cheap, but it's just a tube more less anyway, right? ===================== car background: used for highway travel has 134k and adding 500-1000/wk mobil 1 no mods ===================== last question, anyone ever try a spacer plate on the throttle body. back in the day, i had a friend with an escort and he made a spacer plate for it (about an inch) and it ran pretty good with it (for an escort). i was curious with all that honda puts into their cars, can anything be gained by adding one. |

Most short rams are fairly similar in design. The DC should be a good unit, and the AEM should also be very good.

The AEM and DC both make good intakes. Also give a slight change to the tone of the motor, saying that you are a loud car type of guy. The spacer on the intake won't really do anything, I'd be willing to wager that your Excort wasn't fuel injected, but if it was, then I'd think that it didn't have the same flow set-up as the Honda engines

the escort was like an '80 carbed model and wasn't mine. (just wanted to make that clear, no offense to any escort owners, but not a fan)
i was just curious if they did anything with an fi model. thanks for saving me the cash. |

i personally feel that an intake is and intake... a tube with a filter. free flow mandrel bent tube... what's so special about aem's and dc's? research and development? what's there to research and what's there to develop? i got a cheap aluminum mandrel bent tube with a hi-flow filter for about $20... spend an extra $150 for aem and gain an extra hp or 2.

i wish you answered this earlier. :( i was afraid of the cheap short rams creating problems from poor build quality (since you can't touch through the internet and i've seen some serious crap for performance parts in the past). anyway, i got a dc sports one off ebay for 119 new (including shipping). so i figured that's not too bad. of course $30 for one would have been better. it's coming from manchester honda, in ct. so, i'll let you all know how the deal goes. |

hey yes AEM is one way to go for intakes. thye are proven for the most gains u can get on a Honda/Acura. i have the iceman which is second best. but the cool thing about this intake is u can swtich it from cold air intake to a short ram when it gets wet out or when it snows in ur case. also this thing screams once you hit 4-4500 rpm. people have told me they can barley hear my exhaust cause its soo loud and i had someone drive it around to let me listen to it and it is really loud. depends on how much you want to spend on one.. or u can just do it the Ebay way

in my opinion E-bay is a rip off. if u wanna do a mod just do it the right way and go with AEM or Dc. They will be more expensive but u get what u pay for.
