I really dont understand why an air induction system would have to pass a CARB test?

Wouldnt the only thing that would scarcely matter.. be the stuff POST-combustion, ie.. before/after the cat??

I mean, thats what the CARB board was originally put together for right? Why would it matter about the method used to draw air from the atmosphere?

I'm not sure, but I highly doubt companies like AEM, DC sports, etc. would spend the money to get certified if it wasn't necessary.

guess that makes sense... not really.

They must be banking on this CARB "certification" thing that they require for auto parts.

make sure that the intake is carb approved and not pending, not all aem intakes are carb approved, such as mine for example.
and the intake system does affect the smog system of a vehicle, at least that is what the cop that pulled me over said.

but it's not, that was the point. there is a difference between carb pending and carb legal. there is a strict process with each individual intake design that must adhere to the standards put forth(actually my understanding from the k&n r&d dept is that money is the key process to getting carb exemption) not every intake is legal, look at the ads and websites closer when checking on individual parts(generally the newer ones) and you'll see.

carb approval or not... you can still be illegal with an intake...

the reason they need carb approval is 2 part...

1. More air = more gas in our cars. which in turn creates more exhaust.
2. Some may eliminate the crankcase vent tube or the iat sensor or any number of other emmision equipment that's built into the intake system..

The reason it could be illegal with or without is.

1. Could make your car loud enough to break noise pollution laws.
2. Some states prohibit any modification to the car from stock.

If I ripped past a cop on a backroad late at night with the intake rouring as loud as it could I'm SURE i'd get a ticket around here. (fairfield county Ct.)

My intake is WAY louder than any mustang I've ever heard... it ROARS at like 7k. No it's not as throaty but it sounds like a gas powered sewing machine gone REAL wrong...

I hate that my car is loud... I like quite exhausts.

love driving on sundays with my windows down and my music up, and then have a biker gang completely engulf my car at a light and my eardrums nearly rupture.

nope. not really...... since you live in Omaha, NE, I seriously doubt that the cops would pop your hood to see if you have a CARB sticker.. specifically if you live in a state where emissions arent a deal.

If it was, he would probably write you a "fix-it-ticket" where you can just put on your stock intake, clear it, then put on your CAI again.

Yes number 2 is correct, the state of virginia laws state that any modification to your car that is not oem is illegal, so even putting a set of eibach springs is illegal in virginia.

but isn't having a CARB # mean that the part counts as a direct OEM replacement?? so doesn't that mean that if your intake is broken u can replace it with an intake with a CARB #?

a product that has a CARB# means that it meets the California Air and Resources Board requirements for emissions and various other "tests". It doesn't necessarily mean you can replace your stock intake and have it count as a stock replacement. So, in Virginia's case, it would still be illegal.. correctamundo?

in MANY states it's illegal to modify your car from stock... so it wouldn't matter much if it has a carb sticker or not...

carb is ONLY for calif. and it's ONLY for emmisions... if your locality within cali restricts modification to the car then it's STILL illegal.
