PS2 has so many good games for it, but I've never played the GC, so I guess I can't say for sure.

I have a ps2, my best friend has both. Or had. He had the GC, couldn't find a reason to keep it then pawned it.

I'd say get the ps2, its the top in the market right now.

What's wrong with the GC?

I've got both PS2 and GC. No XBox and no intention of ever getting one if for no other reason than principle.

I honestly play the GC far more than the PS2. I've only got Vice City and GT3 on the PS2, I've got Metroid Prime, Rogue Leader Rogue Squadron II, Pikmin, Timesplitters2, and Robotech Battlecry for the GC. Prime is definitely one badass single player game.

There are a lot more titles for the PS2 but the very vast majority don't appeal to me. There are tons of shitty games and just flat uninteresting games for the PS2 when compared to my taste. Of course this goes for all consoles, but there is more that appeals to me on the GC. I would say that it really depends on your tastes in games for which to get.

Here's my breakdown of some differences in the PS2 and GC:

Controllers: PS2 analog is more smooth than the GC C stick analog, the C stick (little yellow one) is VERY sensitive and I have yet to see a game that allows me to adjust its sensitivity, HOWEVER the GC controller is faster than the PS2 controller; translation, it's easier to be very precise with the PS2 for driving/aiming but it's easier to move fast with the GC. GC controller is more comfortable than the PS2 controller and is cheaper to buy. For games that are available on multiple consoles, the controller can be very important.

Graphics: Hands down the GC beats the PS2. XBox beats the GC in some ways. For games that are available on all 3, you'll find best graphics on GC or XB depending on tatses in graphics. I'm not sure that the PS2 supports component video but the GC does (must buy cable from Nintendo directly, although I believe Monster now sells one). Unless you have a high end receiver, though, with the XB and GC and maybe DVD you'll maybe have too many component sources anyways.

Sound: I don't run a fancy surround system yet (will next month), but I think they are ranked as XB #1, GC #2, and PS2 #3.

Video adjustment: The GC has an adjustment allowing you to shift the video left or right on the console. Some games support shifting as well (such as VC and Prime), however PS2 does not support this at the console level. GT3 has a big band on the left that gets unused on my TV due to the input source and TV not agreeing.....GC games don't have this problem.

Load times: GC loads much faster than PS2 for same titles. For TS2 we're talking 5 versus 20-30 seconds for levels.

Titles: There are very strong PS2 only and GC only games, just like XB. For the GC I personally like Pikmin, Prime, Rogue Leader as being very nice GC-exclusive games, consequently 1 player games. For the PS2 I think GT3 (and probably 4), GTA 3 and VC, and Socom are some of the nicest exclusive titles.

My personal recommendation: Pick the one with the titles you are about the most. If that's not a biggie then try them both and pick the one with the controller you prefer the most. If you still can't decide, take the Cube cuz it's newer, smaller, prettier, and sounds better.

Anyhoo, I hope it's more helpful than the usual "buy this one" or "buy that one" responses.

EDIT BELOW:

More on controllers: GC natively supports 4 controllers and many multi-player games also support 4. PS2 you've gotta shell out extra cash for up to 4 controllers and many (if not most) multi-player games only support 2 players anyways.

Networking: PS2 wins over GC in this department. I'm not sure how the networking of the PS2 compares to the XB, but as far as I've seen the GC has no current network it'll operate on.

well look at it this way.nintendo has and always will be geared twards the younger generation with there G rated games.....no blood guts snot and ass flying when you shoot someone...graphics always look a bit blurry no matter what and the games always seem too dark and textures run together......the onlything i can say about GC is it supports alot more structure work(polygons) in a view....b ut nintendo somehow always ****s up the textures.....if you play something for gc and something for ps2 the same game....you will notice more detail in the texturing and it doesnt look as smudged.....

but i hate nintendo bec ause of there lame little kid games....so i'll stick with PS2.......and you wont regret it if thats what you buy

Go read some side-by-side reviews of PS2, GC, and XB for Timesplitters2 and come back and claim the textures look worse on GC than on PS2. Of course it's somewhat subjective, but I can't complain at all about graphics on the Cube and find them more impressive than the PS2 games.

As far as Nintendo messing up textures, perhaps but there's a lot more to the world of Cube games than Nintendo-developed games. Nintendo games have always focused on cheesy-ass stories with cutsie child-friendly characters and quality gameplay that keeps people coming back. Other developers focus more on blood, guts, gore, porn/adult themes, sometimes better stories and eye popping graphics.....some of them even think gameplay is important. Nintendo does cater more to the young audience but don't think there's only kiddie games for the Cube. On the other hand Pikmin is quite addictive......

I think there's lots of crappy titles for the PS2. Sure there are lots of titles, but I don't find many of them worth playing. I also hate the XB but I do give it credit for having some quality games such as Halo. I'm not into sports games but the latest Madden FB game for XB looks mighty nice in widescreen HDTV and is even fun to play.

PRICE WARNING: Activision is spreading rumors that a PS2 price drop may be in order by May. If that happens expect the XB and GC to follow suit. They are hoping for a $50 cut and projecting that. It's still speculation, but ya never know.

I added some edits above for more technical details.

dang spoog i think you look way into video games too much. Or is that what you do for a living or something?

Oh and my .02 i have a PS2 and am liking it mainly b/c of the DVD setup and the vast number of games. I like RPGs and PS2 has a whole lot of them, so thats what i choose but i have never played that much on GC with exception to the Wal-Mart Demos. So I dont know if i am really qualified to say which one is better.

I pay attention to detail.

The PS2 isn't the best DVD player in the world, though. For much less than $100 you'll find a decent standalone player that'll do a better job than the PS2 and have more features. Digital zoom on DVDs can be sweet, and also play MP3 discs, and come with a remote that doesn't cost extra.

Dude, go for PS2. GC is for little kids, IMO. Yeah, it DOES have its pros, like all the Resident Evil's are on it (MY FAV GAME SERIES OF ALL TIME), but thats about it. PS2...GTA III, GTA Vice city, The Getaway (omg, so much fun), MGS: Sons of Liberty (will never get tired of that game)...just to mention a few.

Gran Turismo 3/2/1 nuff said

Theres also part 4 coming out which is supposed to be online compatible. Another game is Modesto or something, its a game that will be cell shaded racing, but online compatible is the idea.

If you like team based games Socom Navy Seals is great, its not one of those games where your team is just a show of polygons. You actually depend on them.

Tenchu 3!! Multiplayer!! Co-op/Versus (my friend and I did something to make sure we could't see each others screen on versus!). Versus is hella fun when you can sneak up on your friend.

Splinter Cell is no longer exclusive to Xbox and is coming out for GC and PS2. GTA series is exclusive until 2005 I hear, unless the contract is extended.

Capcom reports it working on another Resident Evil for PS2, they report that it will rival the graphics in the GC remake of part 1. With the implementation of set backgrounds thats actually not that difficult to do these days. Since Capcom has reported that it will stop making arcade games that just means we can see Capcom shell out a lot of new games for home.

Lets just all cross our fingers and hope GT4 will let you upload your previous garage!

I hav a Gamecube and an XBOX as of now but i'm looking to buy a PS2. Mainly becuz of Gran Turismo 3 and the 4th one that is coming out later. also GTA 3+4... anyway i love my Gamecube but the only game i'm looking forward to for it is Zelda. that's the only reason i havn't sold it. Ox-Box is AWESOME! why did u exclude it!? it has the best LAN abilities and the online plan is certainly the BEST of the 3 consoles. Ghost Recon, Unreal Championship and Mech Assualt kick serious @$$ online! w00t! plus the voice chat is infinitely better than a keyboard.

but bAk to my advice. Buy the PS2 first. Then get an XBOX instead of the Gamecube. I mean i luv Rogue Squadron (die-hard Star Wars geek) and Resident Evil, but everything else is just PS2 ports... and if you're looking for the 4-Player thing... get the Ox-Box... it's the shizzle nitto!

PS:
the cell shaded racer you sp33k of is called Auto Modelisto or something like that...

PS2 - there's a reason GC costs 150, and PS2 is still at 200 (its a better system.

Seriously though, have any of you Cube haters ever really looked into it, given it a chance, actually paid attention to what's available for it????

PS2 costs more because it's a SONY. Nothing Sony is cheap, even their crappy stuff (which they make/sell lots of).

Prime rules. I'm almost to the point of beating it, but it's already too late to get 100%....I might need to play through again from the top.

Each console has its pros and cons. I'd buy the XB for Halo if I had broadband at home. GC for Prime. PS2 for GT and GTA series. But claiming that GC is for kids? It's like saying a Lude is for kids and IS300 is for big boys. Everybody can enjoy a Lude....

ps2 has backwards compatability so it can play your favorite old ps1 games. GC does have very nice graphics indeed.
Metroid Prime is a pretty cool game, but i still think super metroid for SNES was the best because it was a side scroller. Thats what i think of when i think 'metroid'. The first person is cool, but i would have much rather preferred an optional third person camera angle.
both consoles are good though, but personally i prefer ps2 because it has more games that appeal to my tastes, so just look at it from that perspective, which games you want.
