Need help on choosing and finding an engine.

I'm new to the car scene and have a dead Civic LX. I would like to get a new engine in it. Something with more horses than the stock that's in it. I don't understand the engine coding stuff, so I can't figure out what will fit and give me the speed I'm looking for. Can anyone please help me in starting a new project. All help is welcome.
