Well...I'm not jumping up and down, if that's what you mean. I'm rarely happy when someone dies (although that has been the occasion sometimes). The pope made a lot of bad decisions IMO but that doesn't mean I'm happy he's dead. The said thing is the next pope is likely to be more reactionary.

Well...he was the pope. What did you expect him to make everything about? Lowering mortgage rates and easy home improvement tips? Whoever they pick to succeed him will no doubt be worse. I don't think anything will change for the better in the catholic church for the next 2 or 3 popes.

no, i was implying that he didnt make everything that was going one in the world a religious purpose. or a focus point for religion. untill it crossed paths.

i just dont want the next pope to make everything a relgious focus.

Well...in Ben's defense...I think he meant that he was happy it wouldn't be the only thing on the news anymore (which also turned out to be an incorrect assumption). Honestly, if I want to watch the news, I'd like to see news. The pope died a few days ago...it's not news anymore. Then again that Schiavo girl died before the pope and she's still in the "news". Oh well. Guess I'll just have to stop watching the news altogether...but I will need to be updated on the Michael Jackson trial.

well.. its news coverage on what they are doing post death for both of them... the news is always going to suck, thats why its the news. when its on the war or election we're bitching that its always on and they arnt covering other topics, we as a people just are never happy.

the pope dying and having to re-elect is bigger news than almost any other change in power since its an unschedualed change for the head of one of the major religions. i'd expect them to cover it fully as a news station. it is the biggest thing going on now in the world wether it directly effects you or not.

Well...the fact that it's unscheduled is really the church's fault. I mean really, they should've picked someone to succeed JP II when he starting getting his ass kicked by Parkinson's a few years ago. Seems to me that would've been the responsible thing to do (although not wholely sympathetic). It seems ironic that his stay as pope was marked by unprecidented travel around the world, yet in his last few years it was all he could do to lift his head up.

funny with all the coverage. catholicism is not even the major religion in the world. too bad they grouped all the cristianity toghether, because i know there are gonna be 3-4 more categories. i think the catholics are only about 20-22% of the population in the world today.

its papal tradition not to do that until he dies. im sure they started thinking of canadates, but its unschedualed as far as not a yearly thing. theres supposta be some downtime when all the head cardnals meet in the vatacin to vote on a new pope. speed is not an issue for them.

i think catholicism is like a cult. its tho only huge religion that has a leader. no other religion has someone that so high in mighty whjat ever he does they follow him. i just think that right there is stupid.

besides, steve was right im tired of hearing about whats going to happen next, or what they did with his body today ect. its not any other religion has a huge figure that passes away to make things like this.

well... actually i havce to disagree again haha... if anything its not like a cult. through out time whenever a group of people didnt like the way catholics did things they went off on a tangent of what they thought to be the "right way" of doing things, thus why theres all those little versions of christianity. catholics are very deep in tradition since they are the origional christian religion that everything stemed off of.

Well, really there weren't any "major" offshoots of of christianity until Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the Wittenburg church in the 1500s (detail, among other things, papal abuses). Before that you had small groups that did things their own way...but not too radically different. Then again, if you look at groups like the Cathars in southern France, even those little groups still got fucked by the catholic church as the Cathars were the target of the first inquisition. After that first land/power grab...errr...I mean convertion of heretics...yeah, the church hired Torquemada and headed off to Spain. Since Torquemada makes Hitler look like an Eagle Scout, I'll assume there's no way that the catholic church could've missed how fucked up he was...even had it been just a little.

Before that you had the crusades...and the children's crusades. But I digress. Arguments can certainly be made for a strong catholic/christian link to the occult and paganism. Hell...many of christianity's rituals and rites are swiped from pagans. You know...like the sacrament? Eating christ's body and drinking his blood don't sound a thing like cannibalism. People rising from the dead or having mystical powers seems perfectly normal, too. While other religions may have a spiritual leader, I don't know of any that have such an elaborate hierarchy (bishops, archbishops, cardinals, etc.). As someone who was raised catholic, I think it's the job of other catholics to question the church and what they say since you have no say in what goes on.
