One of my roomates found somewhere that people who download music off the net are 75% more likely to go out and buy cd's than people who don't download music.

And if cd's didn't cost so damn much more people would buy them. Those things cost like what, maybe a buck to produce? They could sell cd's at like $10, still make a large profit and not have to worry so much about people beating the system.

ohh and i watched the thing last night on cnn. someone claimed it costs them only $.39 cents to make a cd ( just a tad more expensive than the price of a blank)

I also recently tried the new napster (I paid for 2 whole songs)...what it's downfall is that the songs are un-changealbe. I couldnt even rename them because of file-lock. WinAmp wouldnt play them, MusicMatch wouldnt play them, only windows media would. I also couldnt change the the file to ATRAC to play on my MD. So....F that

Im on WinMX now because the last DL I did on kazaa I recieved some super spy-ware that couldnt be deleted until I reformatted...I got a virus too (even though I know its not necessarily kazaa's fault for that)

i deff agree with you all....prices on cd's is just wayyyy too high, music companies and singers are making soo much money it's rediculous

yeah i d/l music but i dont d/l the whole cd and then burn it onto a cd, if i want a cd ill either copy it from someone else's cd or buy it

i read somewhere that on average .001% of cd goes directly to the band/artist, if my math is correct it would take 10,000 cds to make up 1 percent, so lets say they sell a cd for $15, thats .15 thats goes directly to the artist after 10,000 cd's sold!

^No its not that low. They get either $.10 or a buck per albumn sold. One of the two and I'm leaning more toward the dollar per cd.

It's actually based on a points system which is written into your contract and can be negotiated by your agent/lawyer. Every album has 100 points and every point represents $.01 of every dollar. So say you're a big solo artist with no back up band or the like. You might get as high as 8 points (which would be a very high number but if you're someone like Britney Spears you could probably pull that off) so you'd make...say....$1.60 for a $20.00 CD. Then everyone else has points to pay for things like production, recording, distribution, engineering, guest appearences, etc (although some of this may be covered by your label or you may have to pay out of your own pocket depending on your contract). If they only got $0.01 per 10,000 CDs they'd have $10,000 for a platinum album (1 million copies sold). If you went diamond (10 million copies...very rare) you'd have $100K. So the fact that these shitty low selling artists riding around in Bentleys and living in mansions tells you they make much more than that. And honestly, I don't have any problem taking money out of Lars Ulrich's pocket (if I listened to any of the newer Metallica stuff, anyway). That little ***** has an elevator in his house...he doesn't need my money.
