How do I remove minor scratches?

Unfortunately I had my 1998 Accord out in one of those Summer storms with the hail and high winds. Evidently a canopy on a neighbor's lawn was lifted by the wind from its attachment and in so doing scratched my car on the the right rear door handle area. The scratches do not seem to penetrate the primer and are therefore somewhat superficial. I have the small bottle of touch-up paint from the dealer. But, before using it should I try light buffing with white polishing compound or some other product to minimize them? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to try Meguiar's Scratch X scratch remover. Wish me luck.
