Violence in high school
Hey guys, i'm writing a paper (ugh, i know) on homophobic violence. What is it? Someone who is against homosexuality and think its nasty or whatever and harasses, assaults, gays, lesbians and bisexuals. ok, with that explained, do u think that its getting worse? better? unchanged? if anyone has personal thoughts/experiences i would really appreciate it. thanks!

its degrating someone because of their sexual preference, you can think that their sexual preference is "nasty" but not be a homophobe. i would say its being afraid to be near them, hear about them, see the, accept them, sometimes to the point of violence(even though thats a hate crime, not homophobia)

I agree with Chris, there is a line between homophobia and a hate crime. Granted in some aspects they are tied together, but not all people that have a homophobia commit hate crimes.
With that said. I guess you could say that hate crimes are becoming more common partially due to the fact that homosexuality is becoming more accepted. People are more open about thier sexuality then they use to be, or atleast thats how it seems anyhow. And because of this more violence is part of the result. Also, keep in mind that laws are stricter now against "hate crimes " so they probably catch more attention from the media. Thats my .02 anyway.

Up here in Canada crime in general is down in high schools because of the zero tolerance that was passed a while back. Mess a kid up and your out of school for good, not too many people are willing to risk their educations to beat up a ***. |

yeah, there is some of that anti-gay sentiment here in the south... lots of it is a spillover of baptist and strictly christian zealots that used to control everything down here...
personally, I am not against people that are gay, I know a few gay men that I like talking to I DO dislike guys that *act stereotypically gay, but I dislike them for their behavior in public, not their preference in private

I don't care what you are or what you believe in (or prefer) until you try to push your thoughts on me. That doesn't equate to violence, just not dealing with them any more.
It is important to note that being homophobia and violence do not have a strict correlation. You can be homophobic and not violent, and you can also be violent and not homophobic (violence against people of another color, religion, or social class). While there may or may not be more homosexual students now than there were in the past, the empowerment and the openness about sexual preference has probably led to an increase in crimes. |
