Regardless of how much we're paying...it's like we're paying twice. And one of those times is for someone else. How about pooling those hundreds of millions of dollar and bringing down prices HERE just a tad and let them pay $1 per gallon.

Actually, like the article says, since Iraq lacks a lot of resources to refine the gas, we're buying at around $1.50/gallon from OTHER countries and trucking it in. $500 million in 3 months. Plus the cost of military escorts to protect the shipments from insurgents...who I'm sure also benefit from the cheap gas.

What would be really nice is if Bush would authorize the release of some of our HUGE stockpile in the reserves. You know, the reserves that we keep for times JUST LIKE THIS. But no, that would cost him money. |

Yeah but as the article also states the average Iraqi earns only $1000/year, so $0.05/gal compared to their average yearly income isn't an extraordinary difference from the relative amount Americans pay.
Not to mention the fact that the high prices would only fuel more resentment toward the troops in the area and cause more stability problems than already exist. It's absolutely no surprise that the government is spending so much money to keep cheap gas on the streets, in times of war things need to be done to protect the stability of the area s much as possible. b |

Well sooner or later it's gonna have to stop. So sooner or later they're gonna get pissed (if they do at all). Really no way around it.

Better...but still not great. At least they'd be working. I won't always knock people on welfare. When I was in middle school I used to hang with a girl who's mom was on welfare. She had a job as a hair stylist but only got commission. No customers, no money. It's not like she wasn't trying...the place she worked at just didn't see much business. That didn't last too long though. i think the majority of people on welfare are honest people...a lot of them just have too much pride and end up dismissing jobs that they feel are beneath them.

Well that's bullshit...no job is beneath no person...I spent 6 years in the Air Force, have my AS, and have 5 yrs experience in my field but after 6 months of job searching to no avail, I am reduced to working a manual labor job (@ $11.50/hr) and Red Lobster (which with tips averages at $12/hr) so between both jobs I'm making approx. $700-$800 week which is what I would make working one job in my field. You do what you have to do to survive.........

Oh I completely agree. Wasn't trying to make excuses for those folks. But I think that's why welfare is so prevelant. Americans are taught to think certain jobs are for certains kinds of people and some people won't do what they feel is "stooping down" to take a job to survive when they can milk the government.

A friend of mine's mother worked at a bank and used to cash welfare checks for people. Some of them would drive up in a Mercedes. People I know who have too much pride to take a given job have way too much pride to take welfare. That's not to say there aren't plenty of honest people on welfare, but I question whether the majority is honest or dishonest. b |

My brother used to work at a convenience store and cash people's food stamps in for lottery tickets. Cashed the welfare checks for them too. He hated it. Can't say I blame him.
On another note, I got laid off about two and half years ago and couldn't find a lot of work. I worked in some pizza places for cash and went on unemployment. That is my money that I put in, so I was ok with it for a while. Only ended up lasting about three months anyway because I found work. But the bullshit is that they tax you again on unemployment wages. Look up the word kickback and that BS is pretty much it. The government man. I love it |
